I responded to a job offer on Facebook for a virtual assistant position called an appointment setter. I was told to set up a call with the CEO of the company providing the job offer and on the call he said I was applying for a job training and job placement service and had to invest money. Initially it was $8000. Then the next day he called me with an offer to work a more lucrative position that would cost another $8000. I accepted and had to send the money through various channels, first a deposit to show my intention of $2400 from my credit card. Then I had to get a loan of $7100, and despite previously in writing him stating I only had to pay $5600, he changed his tune saying I had to pay $7000 to "cover taxes." The more I challenged him on it, the more he spoke to me in a threatening way, suggesting he would rescind the job opportunity and emphasized all sales are final. I didn't want to lose the opportunity so I sent the $7000 incrementally: $2900 through Venmo, $2000 through Zelle, and the remaining $4100 through a direct wire transfer. As soon as all the money was received, I asked in the Telegram work chat when I would start the job training and after no response for several hours, I was told to start cold messaging for recruitment purposes on Facebook and Instagram. I never received any intensive job training like I was promised. I received access to a Google Docs document that had a link to a slide show all about appointment setting which I had stated to him beforehand I didn't need as I had just gotten a certificate from a training program earlier in the summer. He assured me this job would provide ample training in order to place me with one of their 6-7 figure business partners in need of appointment setters. Barely two weeks in, I asked many questions and never got answers. I attended one of their "Zoom Trainings" and it was nothing more than a Q&A session; nothing was prepared, nothing was taught, it was informal and not helpful. They answered my questions saying I wasn't getting anywhere because I "wasn't working hard enough."
