I thought I stumbled on an easy way to make some summer money, but it turned out to be too good to be true. I received an email from one of the faculty members of Roanoke College. I came to discover that their email was hacked. The offer came from a man named Mark Wilson, who said via email that he worked for the president of the Olympic committee. He claimed that he wanted me to work as part of an advertising campaign for the 2020 Summer Olympics. All I had to do was get my car wrapped at their expense and be paid $250 a week plus $50 in fuel to just to drive around town as normal. I fell for it in the beginning since it came from a legit email address from my college. The scam was that I would receive a cashier's check (which was a bogus check) to deposit in my bank account to pay for the car wrap along w/my first week's pay. Then I was to pay the car wrap guy and could keep the rest. I recognized this cash-up-front scheme as a common scam and immediately called the college and filed a police report. The police told me that scams like this are common - "The check will bounce and you will have paid out some of your money and not received any of the funds that you thought you were going to receive" I didn't fall for it, but I'm worried about the information that I did provide to the scammer, including name, address, cell phone, email, make/model of my car. To take advantage of anyone, let alone young college students is terrible...
