This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.
I completed SAM registration two days ago, which allows my company to apply for federal grants. In my confirmation email from the US Government, there was a statement that indicated that my application and processing was completely free. Today, I recieved a call from someone clearly posing as a federal employee, telling me that I needed to pay a $1000 fee to complete the registration. The sent me an invoice for $1000, asking me to sign up for their "services." After a few minutes of conversation, I began to feel like this was a scam and I pressed the caller for more information. They hung up. I then called the SAM registration hotline, and they confirmed that the registration is free and that I would never recieve a phone call from the government and that all SAM registration discussion would be via email.
