I visited a dating site that displayed profiles of women and would contact you when you accessed it. I connected with someone who claimed she was also interested. I wanted to exchange information to meet or talk by phone, so I asked how to get in touch. The site emailed me saying both parties had to accumulate 5,000 credits. I had about 3,000 credits, and it would cost me another $1,200 to send a meet/contact request, which also deducted 500 credits. Then, I’d need to buy more credits to get back to 5,000 a second time. Once the application was completed, it would be sent to the match, who could accept or decline sharing their personal contact info. If accepted, we’d both receive each other’s details to arrange a meeting or date. In total, the process would cost me around $1,200 more, with no guarantee the match would show up or that I could contact them afterward. I noticed the women were all young, educated, and attractive, often flooding me with messages from other matches even while chatting with one. After checking online and finding others had the same experience, I contacted customer service to request a refund, but they denied it, claiming they had met their obligation by providing the service to search for potential matches. I told them it wasn’t clear in the rules that the process could cost $2,000 or more based on their credit purchase system.
