This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.
The call sounded very realistic. They used a recorded message similar to what you hear when calling Xfinity. They asked me to buy gift cards from a specific list of stores and told me to say the cards were gifts so I would not be charged sales tax.
After I provided the numbers from the back of the cards so they could cash them, they called back and claimed the cards did not go through. They then asked me to purchase more cards for the same amount, plus an additional $100.00.
They called from several different phone numbers with a 214 area code. They appeared to have information associated with my Xfinity account, as they knew how much I was paying and claimed they could reduce my bill by half if I paid the amount they requested via gift cards.
I hope authorities are able to stop these individuals from stealing from innocent people. I have always been wary of scams, but this one sounded legitimate due to the information they initially provided.
