I am submitting this complaint regarding MyPassportHub because I was misled into believing this company was affiliated with the U.S. government and that my payment covered my passport name change filing. While attempting to legally change my name on my U.S. passport, MyPassportHub targeted me & presents their company in a way that strongly resembles an official government service. Based on the site’s language, structure, and payment flow, I believed I was paying the required government passport fee. During this process, I provided highly sensitive personal information, including my Social Security number, under the assumption this was part of an official passport application. I mailed my passport as instructed. It was later returned to me by the U.S. government with notice that my application could not be processed because no government fee had been paid. This confirmed that MyPassportHub does not submit applications or pay government fees on behalf of customers, which was not made clear at the time of purchase. When I contacted the phone number listed on MyPassportHub’s website, I was informed that I was not eligible for a refund, despite the fact that the service I believed I was purchasing was not provided as represented. I believe this company uses deceptive and misleading practices by implying government affiliation and charging consumers for services that are free or clearly explained on official government websites. As a result, I suffered financial loss and was placed at risk of identity theft due to the unnecessary collection of sensitive personal information.
