This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.
Scammer sent what looked like an official Virginia SCC business registration renewal reminder, claiming the registration was late, and a penalty of $150 was due. They included a "scan this QR code" to easily pay your registration fee, and a detachable section with which you could mail a check. Upon checking the Virginia SCC site, I found all my businesses to be fully active with no outstanding fees. Then, I googled the company, Next Step Filings, and found them to be a widely known scam.
