I have HP printers in 2 different states. Neither printer would connect to my laptop. I tried to remedy the problem thru the HP Utility app but that didn't solve the problem. I went online to what I thought was the official HP website and entered explanation of problem in chat box. The initial chat did not solve the problem, so was told I'd need to talk to an agent and I gave my phone number. Agent called and said he could help - gave him remote access to my computer. Said could run a scan for $299. He reported several security issues and a Trojan virus. He said he took care of that and my printer did start working. Then he said I needed firewall protection. He said since I had 2 different printers that weren't working properly that meant there are 2 different IP addresses and the best protection for both would be a lifetime license to Sonic Wall Network Firewall Security. He said I'd never require any other anti-virus program; this would take care of any issues I could ever have. Looking back, and as I am typing this, there were clearly red flags all over the place. I had a deadline to meet and needed to print documents for scanning. I like to think in another circumstance I would have been thinking more clearly. I made out a check and scanned it to him. By the time I thought about it all and realized I'd been scammed, the check had cleared. The guy even printed out a 3-page receipt before releasing my computer from remote access. I have attached a copy. I changed passwords for bank, credit cards and email. I took my laptop to Geek Squad at Best Buy - they ran a thorough scan; did not find that any rogue software had been installed and removed 3 infections they did find. I purchased anti-virus software from Best Buy for annual cost of $50.00. My next stop is the local PD just to create some awareness of this particular scam. Although I gave up $7900, I'm relieved it was ONLY that and my bank accounts weren't wiped out or my credit cards run up with fraudulent purchases. Expensive lesson, but well learned.
