Scam information

This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.

Description

"Official Business" letter arrived in a windowed envelope, presort: "Permit No. 699, Mailed From Zip Code 92799." The "PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID" printed on the stamp area of the envelope is the only mark on the envelope. No business address appears anywhere on the single page, single-sided letter. It says it is "Official Business, FORM 9550-WARR, Policy Offer Expire Date 12/01/2025, Immediate Response Needed" with a barcode. The center of the heading says "Final Notice: Postmaster Deliver By 11/24/2025." It then gives "Vehicle Info" for a car no one in the house owns, and says "We need you to call today about an urgent matter regarding your vehicle," and is addressed to my child, who has neither vehicle nor driver's license. All of this information was visible through the window on the envelope. The upper right corner of the letter gives a "Owner's ID," then "Vehicle Service Dept: 1-833-777-1003" and "Se Habla Espanol: 1-833-777-1005". "This Notice is to inform you that we have been trying to contact you and have not been able to regarding your Vehicle's warranty for your **** ******** ******** ***..." She is instructed to call by Dec 1 (a couple of weeks away) to ensure that her warranty coverage doesn't lapse. " Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 8:00 pm CST and Saturday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm CST." She HAS had strange phone calls to her cell phone during school hours (which ring through, despite her phone being on "Do Not Disturb"). She does not answer them, so we do not know whether they might be connected to this letter. Because she does not own a vehicle, we became concerned that her identity had been stolen. We created a credit report account and it showed she has no history to build a score. So I am less concerned now about this being a case of stolen ID. However, I am pretty sure IF we had called the number, it would have led to further problems.
