Scam information

This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.

Description

I bought a new HP printer but could not get it connected to my computer. I went to HP website and was connected to a technician. The technician was trying to help. I got a call on the phone at the same time from a man identifying himself as an HP technician. He said he would get my computer and printer connected. He said he needed to be connected to my computer. I gave him access. He then said the problem was with my internet connection. He said it was hacked and many people were using my server. I don't know much about this technical stuff, so I was easily misled. He said I need to buy protection for my internet server so that nobody can hack it again. I could not use my computer or the internet to check him out because he was in my computer using my internet connection. I did think abou it though. I ended up paying the money for protection which I did not need. He identified himself several times in the conversation as being from HP so I was gullible and thought it true. As soon as I hung up, I realized I had been taken advantage of.
