Description
My sixty-year-old brother who is new to the US and is unaware that scams like these happen, received a call. The caller knew his name, address, the car he drives, and the month he financed his vehicle. The caller proceeded to ask him the following questions: Are you (HIS NAME)? Do you live at (HIS ADDRESS)? Did you finance a (MODEL and MAKE of Vehicle) in (MONTH, 2025)? My brother who is not computer savvy thought the call was from the dealer where we purchased the vehicle. He answered yes to all the caller’s questions. On 11/5/2025, while I was on a business trip, I checked my bank account and saw a debit from my savings account for $142.39 from MEPCO Finance. I am still unsure how they got my bank account number and routing number as I don't even make payments from this account. I called the bank and placed a fraud investigation and closed the account. The bank was able to give me MEPCO's telephone number (800-397-6767). I called MEPCO who stated they only collect payments and I should address the issue with the company that issued the SERVICE CONTRACT. I responded, “what service contract?” Anyways, MEPCO gave me the name of the company (SERVICE ACTIVATION) and telephone number (888-404-1458). MEPCO transferred me to SERVICE ACTIVATION who told me they cannot speak to me; they can only speak to my brother. Grant it I was in a different State for business. When I returned home, I called Service Activation number but got a busy signal (The public should be aware that if you call them with your callers ID on, you get a busy tone). They only answer when they can see your number. The bottom line is that it took me many calls to speak to someone at SERVICE ACTIVATION. Once I was able to speak to their "CANCELLATION DEPARTMENT" today (11/12/2025) and explained why I called, the person on the other line was very intimidated, rude and was in a rust to get me off the phone. I could hardly get a word in. He proceeded to tell me he cancelled the service contract and sent an email confirmation. I asked what email he sent the confirmation to as I know my brother does not use or have an email account. He repeated an email address that neither my brother nor I have. He also said we will get a refund within 5-7 business days. I am not holding my breath. I told him, “By the way, just to confirm I recorded our conversations.” That's when he got annoyed and told me he knows the law, and it is illegal to record a conversation without making the other party aware of the recording. I emphasized that it is not illegal as my State is a one-party consent State for audio recording and that I can legally record a conversation if I am a participant in it. That is when he hung up on me. This review is to let others know that these two companies are not legit and they are scammers pretending to sell extended vehicle warranties.
