When the tech came out I let him know I was having trouble with both garage doors. Showed him the little door where the cables were obviously not wound up and talked about how I believed the motor on large door has worn out. Regarding the main garage door, we discussed that its opener motor appeared to be struggling, potentially indicating a malfunction. Upon learning the motor was an original 2006 model, the technician presented several replacement options, including high-end models priced around $2000 (plus labor) with integrated cameras and Wi-Fi, and another at approximately $1700. 10 year warranty, explicitly informed the technician that I was not seeking advanced features and, as the main door was still functional, a full motor replacement was not my immediate priority. I reiterated my focus on the smaller door and requested a written estimate for repair of both. He thought the small door repair would be around $400. The technician indicated he could potentially address the smaller door today due to scheduling and stated he would review both doors before proceeding. To my considerable surprise and dismay, upon being called back outside, I discovered that the technician had proceeded to install a completely new motor for the main garage door, when he asked me to press the garage door opener on the wall. When I questioned this unexpected action, he confirmed the replacement. I immediately communicated that I had not authorized this work, stressing that our prior discussion centered on the repair of the smaller door and my request for an estimate. The technician attributed this situation to a "miscommunication." I am particularly concerned because this significant installation was performed without my explicit consent, a formal quote, or prior agreement. I am not prepared financially for an unauthorized expense of this magnitude. When I inquired about the possibility of removing the newly installed unit given my lack of authorization and financial readiness, the technician offered payment plan options or interest-free credit card payments. He never fully answered if it was an option to remove as it was fully installed. I told him I would have to pull from my savings as I don’t have the money. When we looked at the little door, he showed me the broken cable and we reviewed the unwound cable. He showed me a new better type of cabling that he recommended to decrease my current issue. I forgot what price he stated but he said he would do 1/2 off. I agreed. He asked about disposing of my old motor as there is a charge to recycle $175. I let him know to leave it. I reluctantly paid since he couldn’t take it down after transferring money from savings.
