I responded to a Craigslist ad offering $400 for a remote recording session (guitar, bass, or drums) for a “commercial real estate advertisement.” The contact introduced himself as Nate Greene, CEO HouseSmart LLC. He sent me a backing track and asked me to record guitar over it. When I asked about payment, he refused secure options like PayPal, Venmo, or direct transfer and insisted on sending a check only. He also asked which bank I use. This is identical to multiple existing reports of the same scam: offer a $400 music gig, send a check, then claim it was written for too much and request a refund (classic overpayment scam). The “HouseSmart LLC” business he references does not appear to exist, and the website he linked (housesmart.cfd) is a suspicious domain. I recognized the pattern before sending him any recordings or personal banking details, but I want other musicians to be aware — he is currently targeting people through Craigslist and TikTok.
