Received an email from [email protected] (an email address otherwise used by Paypal) with the subject "Your automatic payment status has changed, informing me that an "unauthorized ????????.???? USD transaction" was "detected" and informing me to call (805) 500-8932 "to stop the payment." The "customer service url given" was http://www.ginnybrant.com with the "customer service email" being [email protected]. After Googling some of this information I came upon a recent BBB complaint with the same text, so this appears to be a somewhat widespread phishing scheme. No money appears to have been taken from me and I did not dial the number, but the email otherwise appears to have been generated by Paypal, although the recipient was not my gmail address but rather [email protected], with the name "Sister Nancy" attached.
