Coinbase Imposter/Phishing Scam via Text Message I received an unsolicited text claiming to be from Coinbase with a “withdrawal code” (redacted) and a reference number (redacted). The message instructed me not to share the code and provided a phone number to call for support: 888-759-0148. The text was sent from the number +212 81 65 08 29 (exact layout/ spacing of the number I got the text from). When I called the 888 number, the caller attempted to convince me to provide information related to my Coinbase account and asked for the "CB" number. I did not provide any personal information and used a fake name. The caller mentioned “red flags” outside my region, claiming activity in Thailand, which I used to extend the conversation. I did not provide any account details or codes. At the end of the call, I exposed that they were scammers and hung up. The purpose of this report is to document the numbers involved (+212 81 65 08 29 for the text and 888-759-0148 for the phone call) and to provide a detailed account of their social engineering tactics targeting cryptocurrency users. No websites or emails were involved. I wanted to get as much information out of this person as possible while protecting my personal information to get a better idea of how they are phishing, social engineering, etc. This appears to be a crypto-related imposter phishing scam, and I want to ensure these numbers and tactics are flagged for the protection of others.
