I responded to a Nextdoor post about dog walking and was contacted by Kevin Moore via email and text. He claimed his family was moving to my area, that their dog would arrive ahead of them, and I was hired to help with pickup and care. He explained that his employer would cover moving costs by sending me a check, which included my first week’s pay plus extra funds I was instructed to forward to others helping with the move. On 08/18/2025, I received a $3,580.55 check by USPS (from Quaertech Solutions, 3012 Cody Street, Irving, TX. The check was from Houston Sword Sports, LLC). I deposited it into my Navy Federal account. Normally, only $275 is available until a large check fully clears, but instead Navy Federal held all funds for 24-36 hours, then marked the check “approved and verified” in my app and released the full amount. Following Moore’s instructions, I sent: $1,000 via Zelle to Wayne Racine ([email protected]) $500 via Zelle to Dawang American Corporation (786-966-0622) $1,730.55 via Apple Cash to 857-200-6550 The remaining $350 was my “pay” and for dog supplies. Shortly after, Navy Federal reversed the entire $3,580.55 as Adjustment-DR, putting my account in overdraft of more than $2,000. When I called to report fraud, Navy Federal refused to open a claim, saying I was liable. I was told no credit would be issued, despite the fact that they released the funds as verified and failed to follow their own policy (only $275 should have been available until fully cleared). As a college student, I now cannot cover rent and bills. While I understand Zelle/Apple Cash aren’t covered under Zero Liability, Navy Federal’s failure to properly hold the check and its misrepresentation of the deposit as “verified” directly caused this loss.
