On May 22, 2025, I booked a vacation package to Belize through Expedia. Due to an inability to take time off from work around the holiday, we decided to cancel the trip. On June 18, 2025, I attempted to contact Expedia by phone to initiate the cancellation. Unfortunately, the call was misdirected to a scammer impersonating an Expedia representative. The individual claimed that a partial cancellation (only hotel) would cost $500 per person, while a full cancellation covering both hotel and airfare would require a payment of $1,000 per person. Believing this to be legitimate, we provided our credit card information. Shortly after, $2000 was withdrawn from our PayPal account. The scammer assured us that we would receive a 3,300 refund from Expedia for the airline tickets. However, $1800 refunded. Upon following up directly with Expedia, and American Airline, we discovered we had been victims of a scam. The scammer accessed our Expedia account and canceled the booking. Expedia refunded the hotel portion of &1,800. However, the airline portion was issued as a future travel credit. According to American Airline policy, a refund for the airfare is only possible in cases involving medical or health-related issues.
