There are so many houses for sale, and realtors and real estate agents try to make the process easier for you.
Realtors and real estate agents are often similar and generally do the same things. The main difference is membership. Realtors are specific people who are members of the National Association of Realtors. Interestingly, there may be some people in professions related to real estate, like home appraisers or property managers, who may be realtors but can’t help you find a house.
You’ll want to put some time into researching real estate companies and real estate agents before you move on to actually looking for a new home.
Always talk to more than one candidate. You don’t want to sign on with a real estate agent before comparing them to a few other options. Ask for referrals from your friends and family, and check BBB.org and the web to look for reviews or complaints about the people and companies you are considering.
Make sure you meet with the candidates. You’ll be spending a lot of time with the person you hire and spending a lot of money under their guidance, so you want to feel comfortable with the real estate agent you choose.
If you are selling a home in addition to buying one, ask the agents for examples of the packages they have put together to sell homes like yours. Make sure their work looks professional and complete.
Be sure that the real estate agent’s compensation is very clear and makes sense to you. They are typically paid a commission – make sure you know what percentage they are getting and if there are additional fees.
