Finding a dog groomer or cat groomer

While you can certainly do some research and try to learn about dog grooming or cat grooming to do it yourself, many people opt to find someone else to do it.

There are several ways to find pet groomers:

• You may want to start with your nearby pet store where you buy food and pet supplies. They will often have dog groomers or cat groomers on staff or may be able to make a recommendation.
• You can also ask your vet for recommendations. Some vets or veterinary hospitals may include grooming services. Others may be able to make suggestions about where you can go near your home or work to find a groomer to get your animal serviced.
• You should always ask friends and family about their experiences.
• Look for reviews of various groomers before making a decision.  See the list above, or search BBB.org for the business name. 

 

Questions to ask the groomer

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, you should reach out to talk to potential providers. An in-person conversation will give you the most insight into the groomer’s personality and temperament and help you decide if you want them taking care of your pet. If you can’t go in person, a phone call is the next best thing.

In addition to getting a feel for how the groomer may treat your pet, there are questions you can ask about their background and services:

• Do you have experience with my breed of dog or cat?
• Where did you train and do you have a certification?
• Do you or your staff have first aid experience?
• How long have you been a groomer?
• Where will my pet be kept while in your facility? Can I see the space?
• What kind of products do you use?
• What kind of insurance do you carry?
• Will someone always be watching my pet?
• Will my pet be interacting with other animals?
• Can I stay with my pet during the grooming?

 

Mobile dog grooming or cat grooming

In addition to groomers at pet stores or in their own facilities, you may also be able to find mobile pet grooming near you – where the groomer comes to your home. The groomer will arrive in a van and take care of your animal right on site where you live. This service may be more expensive, but some people will choose it because of the convenience.

 

Booking a pet grooming appointment

When booking a grooming appointment for your pet, make sure you are clear on the services being offered and their costs.

Read any contract closely and make sure you understand all the charges and fees.
