Remodeling a kitchen can be costly and time-consuming, but it can also increase the value of your home if done right. Before diving into a renovation, consider these factors:

• Consider your family’s lifestyle and needs. Is the kitchen a highly-trafficked area? How often does your family cook?
• How much storage do you need? If you own a lot of large appliances, you will need cabinets and shelves with extra headroom installed.
  • Consider ALL your options before remodeling begins. Extra storage like lazy Susans and pull-out cabinets are much more expensive to add and modify later on.
  • Be sure to choose and measure appliances BEFORE you begin the remodel, so you know they will fit!
• How much seating and counter space do you want? Do you or your family typically eat in the kitchen or living room?
• Consider the “work triangle” – how close is your sink, refrigerator, and oven from each other? How can that flow be improved without ripping out plumbing?

 

Remodeling a kitchen on a budget

While it is important to find a contractor within your budget, there are some things you can do beforehand to cut costs before even receiving an estimate.

• Visit home improvement centers for free advice. They can give you computer-based models to help lay out the floor plan of your new kitchen and explain all the latest trends.
• Vow to keep your current cabinets. According to Home Advisor, new cabinet installation can cost up to 30% of your remodeling budget – but it does not have to. With some sanding and repainting, an old cabinet can look as good as factory-new. New cabinet knobs will also give them an extra wow-factor for a fraction of the price.
• Don’t move plumbing. Work with what you have.
• If you are handy, look into DIYing small projects, but be cautious. If you overdo it, you might have to pay an expert to fix your mistake.
  • Stenciling and painting a new pattern on an old backsplash can give it an updated feel for a fraction of the cost.
• Granite doesn’t have to break the bank. Visit a granite supply yard and check out their remnants – if you don’t have a lot of counterspace to cover, you might score a great deal.
