More information on finding car rentals you can trust
When renting a vehicle, not only do you want to find a good deal, but you also want to ensure you’re renting a reliable car from a trusted business. While you compare different locations and companies, remember to look for the BBB Seal – it’s The Sign of a Better BusinessSM and means the business adheres to BBB’s Standards for Trust.
To start booking a rental, first determine the location from which you want to rent. Airport-based rental locations offer an easy and convenient option for those flying to their destination and needing transportation afterward. However, these locations may be pricier than renting from an off-airport location. Whether you’re flying or driving to your destination, search for rental companies in the area and compare prices between locations.
If you need to, you can book a one-way rental car, in which you drive your rental to your destination and return it at one of the rental company’s locations there. However, you may have to pay extra for this option.
Be sure to compare prices between a few different rental companies and locations. Some rental companies may be offering special discounts or promotions. Always read the fine print to see what is and isn’t included in your rental price.
Some car rental companies require you to pay with a credit rather than a debit card. Look into these payment options before finalizing your rental.
To keep the cost of your rental lower, consider what add-ons are necessary for your trip. Don’t feel pressured to pay for anything you may not need, like a pre-purchased full gas tank, GPS device, or a vehicle upgrade. You can also keep the cost down by only adding one driver to the rental.
The minimum age to rent a car in most areas is 25 years, and you must have a valid driver’s license. If you are younger, you may have to pay extra fees.
If you drive a rental car where there are tolls, you can pay for them through the rental company, but it might cost more. If you have your own toll pass that works in the area you’re traveling, you can use it and save money. Always check that you have not activated the toll pass in your rental if you are using your own.
You may be able to get a better deal on your rental if you wait to book until the last minute. However, this approach may lead to being unable to book a rental because they are sold out.
Based on your travel plans and budget, weigh the pros and cons of booking in advance or last minute. If you’re looking to book at a popular travel destination during a busy vacation season, booking in advance can give you peace of mind. If you’re traveling in the off-season to a lesser-traveled location, you could potentially wait to book to get the better rental deal.
What about insurance? Before you purchase car insurance from a rental company, check with your personal car insurance agent to see if your existing policy already covers rental cars. Your current policy may cover any damages incurred to the rental and/or your liability as the driver.
Like with any contract, always read your car rental contract thoroughly and ensure you understand the terms before you sign it. Confirm that the price and the rental dates are accurate, familiarize yourself with the pick-up and drop-off times, and note any additional fees or charges you could incur.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
