Avoid getting scammed: Red flags to watch For
To ensure you make the most informed decision for you, complete research and obtain multiple quotes before deciding on an auto repair or service. Watch for these red flags to avoid a scam.
- The mechanic recommends a car repair purely off of your vehicle's make, model, and mileage and without inspecting your vehicle.
- The mechanic refuses to put an estimate for the auto repairs in writing.
- The mechanic will not show you the old parts.
- The mechanic will not explain the problem to you because “you wouldn’t understand” or “it’s too complicated.”
14 services that don't require a mechanic
Some car owners choose to repair and service their car themselves. Before deciding if you want to complete repairs yourself or hire a mechanic, consider the work required and the level of car knowledge available. If the auto repair is done incorrectly or if the issue is misdiagnosed, it could cause additional problems. Additionally, you may underestimate the amount of time it takes to perform the repair. Tasks that some car owners choose perform themselves are:
- Replacing:
- Air filter
- Windshield blades
- Headlights or tail lights
- Battery
- Spark plugs
- Side view mirrors
- Tires
- Radiator
- Belts
- Brake pads
- Alternator
- Oil filter
- Performing:
- Oil change
- Radiator flush
3,000, 5,000, 10,000? When do you actually need to change your oil?
The short answer? Confer with your car’s manual. Each maker has their own rule for the number of miles to reach before an oil change for each model. Depending on your driving habits and weather conditions, it may need to be completed more frequently. Monitor your oil level or have a local auto repair and services check it each month if you are unsure.
Factors that could affect the frequency of an oil change:
- Extreme (hot or cold) temperatures
- Frequent trailer loading
- Driving short distances often
- Frequent stop-and-go driving (traffic)

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
