My son was involved in a check scam/fraud. He has his own banking account, but since he is a minor, it is linked to my name. It is not a joint account as I do not see his activity or have access to his funds/account. He deposited a $12000 check for an item he was selling online. The person, very shortly after confirming the money was available, pulled out of the deal and started asking my son for the money back. ******, my son, started to ***** the money little by little back to this individual. My complaint is that the bank let all the funds be released to a minor account. They did place a $6000 hold, but within a day or two, released it all again. This was a minors bank account. I have not even deposited a check for such a large amount. The bank made to attempts to reach out to me to follow up with a deposit like this. They didn't place a permanent hold onto the funds till the check was cleared. I feel the bank neglected their duties by allowing this to happen an not doing their due diligence to flag this unusual activity on a minors account and at the least contact me. They immediately after getting the fraud notice then reached out to me stating I was responsible for the $12000 debt and if I did not set up a payment arrangement it would go to collections under me. I feel they should take responsibility of the $6000 that they released after placing on hold and that no longer being part of the debt I owe to them. My son spent some of that money so I agree we should be responsible for paying that portion back.
