- Additional Info:Consumers have reported receiving a letter informing them that they have been chosen to act as a mystery shopper. The letter includes a cashier's check and consumers are advised to deposit the check into their account. Consumers are then told to use a portion of the funds to purchase merchandise at designated stores, transfer a portion of the funds to a third party using a designated wire service company, and keep the remainder. The cashier's check turns out to be fraudulent.
The BBB advises consumers to report any fraudulent schemes to the Anti Fraud Department, a task force jointly managed by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The project hotline can be reached at (888) 495-8501, by facsimile at (705) 494-4008 or by writing to OPP Anti Rackets Branch, P.O. Box 686, North Bay, ON P1B 8J8.
