I own a condo in ****** that I had rented out over the last few years. During the time my tenant lived there, Carma bought the previous submetering company and blocked the building (so people have no choice but to transact with Carma). My tenant was basically forced to move her account to ********************. I have called other utilities and they have said they cannot transact with me.Now that my tenant has moved out, Carma is forcing me to pay a $50 "new account fee." My account info was with the previous submeterer (which Carma purchased) - you'd think, if they were a responsible business, they would transfer the owner's information at the time they made the tenant create a "new" account, but they didn't. The language of their own contracts specify that landlords are responsible for tenants' lack of payment, but shrug, I guess.As the owner, I was not informed about any of this, nor offered information about Carma. When I queried the $50 "set up" fee with their customer service, they said that's how they do things (again, ALL of my account information was with the previous company that THEY purchased), so IMO, this is not a new account. This so-called new account fee is utter BS - just a junk fee they are collecting to juice returns. I guess I'll be forced to pay it but I'm not keeping quiet about it.

We can appreciate that additional fees on invoices are not always welcomed. With CARMA and other companies, billing for an Occupancy charge is standard. It covers the admin fee for opening and closing accounts etc, when customers move in and move out.
