On September 11, 2021, I subscribed to online access to the Hamilton Spectator on the basis that it would cost $1/mth for the first 6 mths and would continue the regular rate after that unless I cancelled. I received an email confirmation CLEARLY STATING IT WAS A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION. Toronto Star (affiliate of the Spec?) has been taking $4.50 from my credit card for Sep & Oct. When I called Customer Service I was told that it was not $1/mth + tax but rather $3.99/mth + tax. I told the agent I specifically saw the online offer as $1/mth for the first 6 mths. She said she her system was down and would call me back when it was back up. I waited or hours and called her again and she admitted it was $1/mth but it was a one-year term. She offered to ask her manager to call me and it has been more than 2 business days and no one has called. The company has been very disingenuous in their business dealings.

      24/11/2021

Business Response /* (1000, 7, 2021/11/23) */ Thank you for the feedback. We have reached out to the customer via phone by one of our supervisors and explained what happened from our end. There was no intent to mislead a consumer, it was an unusual circumstance. We have offered the original price to which the customer decided not to proceed. We apologize for the confusion with pricing. Consumer Response /* (2000, 9, 2021/11/24) */ (The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.) I apprecIate that the business has since reached out to me. I had tried to no avail to speak to a manager about my dissatisfaction to no avail, despite a number of times when the telephone agents indicated to me that their manager would call me. Now that I have been contacted by the regional customer service manager, I am satisfied with the outcome. Thank you, BBB, for your intervention.
