On August 29, 2024, BBB contacted the business regarding claims made on its website and online advertising and requested they be substantiated, modified, or discontinued.
The business has made such claims as “Hobbs Home Solutions is the the go-to choice for commercial painting services in the area” and “We are the local leader in the industry”. Superlative statements in advertisements about the tangible qualities and performance values of a product or service are objective claims for which the advertiser must possess substantiation as they can be based upon accepted standards or tests. BBB requested substantiation of these claims.
The ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) is very particular on how companies can advertise electrical services. According to the Electrical Safety Authority, contractors are unable to advertise electrical services unless they are registered with the ESA. If a company is a general contractor, then the ad must say that they only use ECRA/ESA-Licensed Electrical Contractors to perform any electrical work. BBB requested a copy of the businesses ESA licence.
The business is offering plumbing services, however we ere unable to locate a plumbing license. In Ontario, plumbing businesses advertising themselves as contractors must hold a Plumbing Contractor license. The license is required for any business involved in the contracting and/or repairing of plumbing installations. BBB as requested substantiation of the businesses Plumbing License.
The business has indicated they offer insulation installation. This trade is regulated under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021, and involves an apprenticeship program and a certifying exam. BBB has requested substantiation of certification.
The business is advertising that they are licensed roofers however, BBB was unable to determine which license this refers to.
While the business was initially responsive to our requests, the business has since failed to make the requested modifications and has not provided substantiation for the advertised claims.
