I am appalled with management at South Burnaby Veterinary Hospital.My elderly ** **** *** mother has been bringing her (***** ********) cat for nail trims since moving to the Province approx 5 years ago. In December 2023 she tried to make an appointment to have her cat examined as he was not eating and problems eliminating. Unfortunately there was no appointment until the following week so the cat was taken to ********* ****** ******** for examination and bloodwork and given the diagnoses of hyperthyroidism with opinion that the cat would probably live only another 6 months or so given he was already 15 years old. My mother changed the cat's food on vet recommendation and provided some medicine to help with elimination. While the cat is still comfortable, naturally his condition over time continues to deteriorate...but he is not in pain and has some good days and some not so good days.When we last had the cat in for a nail trim we were informed that unless South Burnaby Vet Hosp conducted it's own examination and tests that they would no longer perform nail trims...that their policy is that the cat must receive annual exams to permit nail trims. We arranged for transfer of vet records so SBV could see the exam and tests and Christine (vet tech) said she would refer to the medical director for a decision as to whether the cat could have his nails trimmed.When I called recently for an appointment I was told there was a note on the file that no more nail trims would be done unless an Examination by SBV was made. I explained that the cat after having come to SBV for the past number of years, was comfortable/familiar with the staff and given the cat's advanced years that I was reluctant to go elsewhere and potentially upset the cat. SBV was firm in their ask for an Exam.I think this really is just a cash-grab for Exam and test fee...how uncaring to refuse a simple nail trim, especially when a recent exam by another qualified vet had been made.
