November 2, 2024 I had a reservation for 17 people at Paper Lantern. The Thursday before I e-transfered a $250 deposit and by phone was told that there would be an automatic 18 percent tip and a minimum spend. As far as I could see everyone there ordered food and drinks obviously some one which were non-alcoholic for drivers. Two hours into our evening they came to me to say that I was the only one so far who had spent their ridiculously high $60 per person minimum and my additional cost would be $360 to make up for it. If you look at their menu, you will see appetizers ranging $5-9, dinners approximately $12 and cocktails approximately $16. How do they expect a bill of $60 per person per tax/tip unless they are forced to order several cocktails or multiple dinners. In my opinion this discourages drivers from going there and what a completely unprofessional way to handle a business. They only told me the details by phone so I have no proof on paper that I was not informed that the minimum spend per person would be that much. In fact it seemed to me from the beginning of trying to make the reservation that they were making up the rules as they went along. Its embarrassing that my guests had to be made to feel bad for not spending $120 per couple. The ones sitting right beside me had spent $100 and I saw them order quite a bit. My friend said to me well unless they plan on paying her taxi home she could not order any more drinks. Completely wrong for a business to make customers feel bad for not drinking enough or to order more food that frankly was not that good and came to some cold.
