Many of us have heard of being "ghosted" after a date, but have you ever been ghosted by your tax preparer? Unfortunately, many have, and they're often met with serious consequences.

"Ghosting" can happen one of two ways

Be wary of those offering fast refunds or large returns.

Your return amount, deduction amount, or taxes owed is solely based on your past year's tax information and the current tax laws. The time it will take to receive your refund or tax notice, will depend entirely upon the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Carefully review your tax return.

Before your tax return is submitted to CRA, ensure it was completed properly by your tax preparer. If a tax preparer is submitting your tax return to CRA on your behalf be sure to ask for proof that your taxes were in fact filed on your behalf.

In Canada, tax preparers who accept payment to assist with five or more tax returns MUST electronically file those returns and be pre-screened and approved by CRA to do so. Tax Preparer EFile eligibility must be renewed annually by CRA.

Check BBB.org for complaints and reviews on tax services in your area. Be cautious of "pop-up" and seasonal tax services. Don't be afraid to ask about their processes, credentials and experience. Always look for the BBB Seal - It's the Sign of a Better Business.
