In August 2023, I was on the roof of my house when I noticed that there was a problem with some of the shingles. Many of the shingles appeared to be shedding the granules, revealing fiberglass on the shingles. This roof was installed May 2008 with a 30 year lifetime warranty.I contacted the ************* responded immediately. An inspector was sent to my house to look at the suspicious shingles. The inspector went directly to his supervisor who then came out to do another inspection. It was definitely confirmed that there was something wrong with the shingles & these shingles were located all over the roof. It was determined the damage was not weather-related. The roofer came back with an offer on roof replacement, which was not satisfactory. It was time to involve the manufacturer of the shingle, Malarkey Roofing. The beginning of October a representative came out from Malarkey Roofing (******, ****). He removed several shingles to send back to ********, ****** for testing. He was overnighting the shingles to their lab & stated that we should have an answer within a week. Three months later & we have not heard a word from Malarkey. Our roofer gets a weekly text from my wife asking the status of our roof. The roofer came back with another offer, which we rejected. Malarkey needs to be involved in this process since the damaged shingle is their problem. To date, Malarkey has been silent & will not even return phone calls/messages from our roofer. It is clear that they do not want to rectify this situation & have very poor customer service. We have been dealing with this situation going on six months. This issue should have been rectified by now. Malarkey doesnt seem to have any interest in providing customer service to me or the contractor (Able Roofing). I have noticed that Malarkey has had similar complaints elsewhere (out of state) & were either silent, rude or didnt give satisfactory compensation for their substandard materials. Through BBB, I am hopeful that we can come to some sort of restitution between the contractor, *************************** so that a new roof can be installed this spring free of charge as stated in the original warranty.

The shingles on my North facing roof have deteriorated after 4 years. Malarkey sent out someone to inspect and after 4 months replied that my shingles may have been exposed to mineral oil. Funny, only the North facing ones along diagonal lines were exposed. Exactly the roof hip lines. I guess if someone knew in advance which ******* would be placed where they could do that. Here is their reply to the claim:RE: Your Malarkey Shingle Warranty Claim #Mr. *********** have finished our review of your recent shingle warranty claim. Your claim was filed due to a concern with the performance of your Legacy Scotchgard shingles that were applied to your home in 2019. Our technical inspector visited your property in July 2023.The inspection and review confirm that some of these shingles are exhibiting significant damage. The damage appears to be externally caused and not the result of a manufacturing defect or blue-green algae growth. We have seen similar-looking damage attributed to mineral oil that metal components are sometimes coated in to protect them during shipping, but without destructive testing we cant say for certain that is what has caused the issue. The warranty provides coverage against manufacturing defects only, and damage attributable to external causes is not covered. There is no justification for a warranty settlement, and your claim is closed. If you have further questions or concerns, or feel we have reached this decision in error, you may contact our office at 800.... or via email at e-mail address.Sincerely,**************** Manager Malarkey Roofing Products

I believe that the claims manager was trying to say the granule loss appeared to be from an external source. He felt mineral oil may have been a possibility (from the skylights), as we have seen issues from solar panel installations that have been installed and not wiped down. The areas where there is granule loss are under dense vegetation. Tree sap can cause a lot of damage to composition shingles. The sap is a volatile material, acting like a solvent. The area of your house that is loosing granules is. as our inspector described, like a tropical rainforest.  If you would like to have a contractor remove some shingles, we can look into what is in the areas of granule loss. You had left the area and our inspector did not want to remove the shingle without you there.
