              On 4/5/2024 I finally accepted a job offer after 6 months of unemployment due to a layoff. The new company uses Sterling to do a background check. I completed all the necessary forms for Sterling that day. The process is supposed to take 2-3 business days and my new employer set a start date of 4/22/2024. Since then, the estimated completion date has been repeatedly pushed out and is now showing 4/25/2024 which may delay my start date and create financial hardships for my family. I have had many, many background checks performed over my 30 year career and this has been the longest and most opaque process of any of them. I literally have no idea what is happening with it. I was asked to provide addresses for the past 7 years and I've only lived in 2 places (adjacent counties) in that time. There is no reason this report should take so long other than incompetence.

              I am currently losing the opportunity to be hired for my dream job at **************** because the background check is inexplicably "hung up with the county" after nearly three weeks. I provided everything they requested immediately, and they stated on the telephone today that "they are not responsible for the time it takes to complete the verification," though I will be unable to accept the position (which requires relocation) directly due to Sterling's delays and unwillingness to follow up. Clearly based on the reviews, this company is unreliable and negatively impacting people's lives.
