I applied for financial aid for the school year 21/22 in 2020. In the summer quarter I did not receive ANY notification of aid. Throughout the summer and at the beginning of the fall quarters. Despite repeated attempt to contact, no one from the financial aid reached out to me. 8/27 I received notice of award, but there were no awards until 10/12. I only received an offer for loans and not the grants I was expecting through my FAFSA. I had to call repeatedly before I was able to get through to someone at the financial aid office and then was told that I was ineligible for the Grants because of how I was "coded" and that because I was seeking a "professional/technical" degree I would not be given access to this money despite the fact I WAS eligible last year for the grants and had to pay very little out of pocket with NO loans. The school THEN said if I change to a longer program I would then be eligible for this grant ****** I feel coerced into taking more courses so they can get more$Business response

Tell us
We are only able to award students in a Prerequisite program a loan and that we wanted to work with each student to determine if a degree seeking program was a better option for them and more in line with their educational and professional goals. A degree seeking program could be a certificate, associates degree or bachelors degree program and we suggest they meet with their success coach at Pierce College to determine the best guided pathway for their career choices and see if the program they were coded to needed to be updated in our system. The award offer that is referenced in the email is when a blank award letter was generated to the student with HEERF emergency funding was added to their account. The system will generate an award letter, but HEERF funding was not to be identified as financial aid so it would not negatively impact financial aid need.
Thank you,
