      On 22 November 2023, a 2010 Hyundai Genesis was dropped off for a transmission repair. The price quoted was approximately $1500 to install a transmission. The shop called and stated that the transmission they purchased did not work and McCoy's Auto Repair will be charging me the customer the labor of putting the transmission in and taking it out to send back to the place they received the part for to get a credit for the part. McCoy's Auto Repair stated that they can get another transmission to put into my car but if the transmission does not work, again I would be held liable for the cost of labor to install and remove the transmission and still the car would not be fixed or drivable. On 16 January 2024, I received a call stating that the shop has taken the transmission they ordered out and my vehicle is ready to be picked up with no transmission in the car. I am left with a bill of approximately $963.50 and must pick up a car with no transmission in the car and totally unable to drive the car. My dispute is that the McCoy's Auto Repair shop did not provide a cost estimate in writing before they began any car repair work disclosing their unfair and deceptive practices that labor charges would be incurred whether the transmission they ordered worked or not. The information detailing the specifics of the pre-work labor charges that would be incurred for a transmission they ordered was not placed in writing to give a clear understanding of the cost of repair whether the parts they installed worked or not.       We were contacted on November 22 of 2023 by Mr. ***** ****** stating that he had a 2010 Hyundai Genesis that he believed that the transmission was defective. We told him that we would diagnose the issue to confirm his suspicions. The customer  had the vehicle towed over and  we diagnosed and confirmed that the transmission was bad and at that point got estimates on a reconditioned one from a dealership that had a 12 month parts and labor warranty, as well as a used one that had a 30 day warranty only. The difference in cost was substantial. We went over the guidelines with each option repeatedly telling him that a used transmission had no labor warranty from the supplier nor from us that if we put it in and it was bad, he was responsible for the labor for another one, if he chose to try another and that the.  supplier of the used transmission would supply another transmission, but would not pay any labor at all. Before the decision was made to buy a used transmission, we had repeatedly went over this with him no less than five different times before he made up his mind to go that route. we ordered the transmission received. The transmission installed the transmission and the transmission was no good. We called Mr. *******  told him that it was a  bad transmission and the company would try to find another one  as we had talked before he was responsible for labor to change it out.  Within the next few days, we was contacted from a lady that said she was his mom and was complaining that he had to pay labor again. This is the first time that we had any idea that anyone else was involved other than him. She informed us that he was A college student, and apparently wasn’t capable of making those decisions. Time went on without any confirmation on what to do. We were at the point if we did not take the transmission out and return it, we wouldn’t get any credit because we had already paid for the transmission, but had received no payment at all from Mr. ******. From this point on, we were contacted and made our contact with his mom. We told her that the transmission company would issue us $850 credit which we would apply and we had also replaced the tire because we couldn’t drive the car to test drive one of the tires were bad. we had told her if they chose not to proceed the balance that was owed at this point was $993.99 which was labor to take the transmission out and put it in and the price of a tire that we had installed on the vehicle. she was concerned that we hadn’t provided a written estimate to her son although he had never asked for one, It  would have been easy to supply to him. Everything was done verbally multiple times, and was confirmed verbally. We never actually met him.  Everything was confirmed over the phone. I’m assuming that’s when she contacted y’all but we are still waiting on a decision what they would like to do from this point. Let me know if there’s any more information you would like.       I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. I am not satisfied with this resolution as McCoy's at a minimum should have placed the estimated cost of labor in writing for complete  acknowledgement for labor to acknowledge a clear understanding of their claim. The understanding was that the car would be picked up when fixed and the cost quoted to replace the transmission and labor would be one time. No mention of passing on the labor to the customer if the transmission did not work and each time until the transmission is fixed. There is no way an agreement of such would have been made if it was clear that over $900 would be charged regardless if the transmission is fixed or not and your original transmission will be out of the car leaving the car inoperable. I believe the McCoy's Auto Shop is better than that and should at a minimum hold itself to a higher standard and be partially responsible for the outcome. Regards, ******** ****** ******* *******

      I took my Durango into McCoy's for an inspection sticker. They called me advising that there was over $300 worth of work that needs to be done. I authorized, they called back advising they found other issues and the cost is over $600, I authorized. They called back saying that the sleeve that holds my oil dipstick is rusted into the manifold and the new charges would be close to $1,000. I went to pick up the Durango and I drove it once within the following 2 weeks and when I went to start it in my driveway to drive it again the engine started making a noise when I started it. I turned it off and called McCoy's and they towed the Durango back to the shop and called me advising that I need a motor and need to pay an additional $2,500. I advised them that I had no engine problems before taking it to them, they advised that the jeep has high mileage and it's probably time to replace the engine. I advised them that I take good care of that jeep and there were no engine problems before they went into the manifold. They then advised that the paperwork says that there was no oil in the motor when I 1st brought it to them, I advised that I had put oil in it 1 week before I took it in for inspection, plus how would they know if there was a huge hole in the sleeve that holds the dip stick and the entire bottom was rusted out. They advised that an engine would be needed. I talked to a mechanic from a different shop and ask him if they could have messed up my engine? He advised that if they went into the manifold it depends on how they cleaned out the rust, if it wasn't suctioned out then some of the rust could get in my oil pan and then circulate to the engine causing it to throw a rod. I went to McCoys and told them what he said. They then pulled out paperwork from my 1st visit and there was a hand written note on the paperwork stating that the engine was making a noise. I told them that wasn't in the original notes and could have been wrote down at any time.

      Mrs. ***** brought a 2005 Dodge Durango in for state inspection in February 2023. The vehicle mileage was 251,722. We checked it for inspection and informed her at that time what it needed for inspection and also that there was no oil on the dipstick whatsoever when they brought it, and it was making a noise. the dipstick tube had rusted in to on the exterior of the engine not the interior of the engine. She approved the work for state inspection and to replace the dipstick tube and to change the oil and filter and put oil in it. She finally pick the vehicle up on April 17. She called back on May 1 and said there was a clicking noise from the engine. For us to diagnose.  the mileage at this time was 252,543. We had informed her previously that she needs to keep a check on the Oil because it was using oil and it had gotten very low and could have possibly damaged rod and main bearings. When we brought it back in, we noticed it had a noise on the bottom side of the engine, and it also had a torque converter bolts that were loose and we could not tell if that was the only noise until that was repaired. We fix that and then was able to diagnose that it had rod and main bearing noise. We informed her of that she chose not to repair and come and picked the vehicle up. we told her it shouldn’t be driven because the engine was knocking severely. I’m not sure what she’s talking about is suctioning rust out of the engine. I’ve never heard of that in 43 years of being in business, but there was no rust in the engine. the rust on the dipstick was to the exterior of the engine. There’s no way a dipstick can rust inside an engine with all the oil.  If you would like to call for further clarification, I would be glad to talk to you. My phone number is ###-###-####.       I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. First off they never advised me that my oil was low and to keep a check on it.  I am the one that advised them that I was checking the oil every 2 weeks but the dipstick was always low and I wasn't for sure if it was burning oil due to high mileage or if there was an oil leak.  I advised them that my driveway as well as where I park at work are both concrete surfaces and I haven't noticed any oil leakage on those surfaces.  As far as a noise in the engine, that was NEVER told to me and was hand written on the paperwork after I complained to them that my engine had no issues at all.  If this was something that they told me then it should have been on the computer print out of the paperwork not a hand written note that was added after the fact to try and cover themselves.  I ask the mechanic if there was rust in the manifold then how was it removed, he advised that the rust was not vacuumed nor suctioned out, they just pulled it out and replaced it.  When I went to pick up the vehicle it would not start, the owner advised that it was probably because it had been sitting for a week.  I advised him that the battery was almost new and it sits at my house in the driveway all winter why I drive my truck and when I go to start it I have never had an issue.  He jumped it so that I could take it home and when I went to pull off there were no brakes.  I picked it up at the close of business so they were closed for the day and I couldn't return it. Luckily I live only a few blocks away so I took my time and drove the back roads to get it home.  Once I was home I started looking over my paperwork and noticed they charged me for tightening the battery (there was nothing wrong with my battery) I had my brother come over and take a look and he advised that the battery cables were not on correctly which he fixed and the jeep started.  I also noticed on the paperwork that they charged me for extra oil, which surprised me because I took a 5 gallon jug of oil when I dropped it off and the jug was placed back in my jeep with about 1 gallon left in the jug so if more oil was needed then what I provided then why did they give me oil back? This is very frustrating because I simply took my vehicle in for an inspection, I have spent over $1,000 and now I don't even have a vehicle.  There were no engine, brake nor battery issues when I took the vehicle to them. There was no noise coming from my engine and no one advised me of any noise until after all of this happened.  I just want my vehicle fixed back the way it was before I took it to them.  If I have to get a lawyer and go to court then that will be my next step.  Please advise.  Regards, **** *****

      I had the information reviewed again and I don’t think she understands that the dipstick that rusted  was on the outside of the engine not the inside of the engine. It couldn’t rust on the inside of the engine because of the oil that it sticks down into. I’m not sure what she means about vacuuming out rust because there was no rust in the engine, it was all the external part of the dipstick. I think she’s talking to someone that really is leading her in the wrong direction because there’s no possible way that anything inside the engine can rust. I will look over this again, and see if she’s trying to say something that I’m not understanding but from what I’m seeing that’s what she is saying. I will try to see if I can pull anything else out of what she saying that I can leave you a message on Monday. Thank you.
