I called **** to work on a heater core on a hot tub included in a recent home purchase. He estimated the job would cost around $150 dollars and came out that week to take a look. Upon arrival he said it was actually the heater itself and would be about a $400 dollar job. I told him to move forward with the repair and he said he would be waiting for a part. A few weeks went by and I didn't hear anything. I called him again and he said he had gotten covid so no big deal. A few weeks later he called late on a Saturday night and said he had just pulled up at my house to do the job which was unexpected as I hadn't heard from him in a while. He did the job and finished up presenting me with a $998 invoice. I was expecting a **** in the $400 range and at this point I had little recourse as the job was already finished. I asked him why the **** was so much and what happened to his $400 quote and he said the part was more than expected. I asked him why he didn't tell me that up front and he told me not to worry because my hot tub is now worth 5-7 thousand dollars with the work he did (which is irrelevant and probably untrue anyways because it's a very old hottub). The work he did was fine and I didn't mind the wait, but I really felt screwed over that the **** had doubled from what he quoted me and I had no chance to decide if it was worth it to me at that price point because sprung it on me after the work was done. Very dishonest in my opinion and originally I was thinking the job would be $150 or $400. His invoice stated $648 for parts, $250 in labor (I'm not sure how long his diagnosis took but the repair itself took around 20 mins) and $100 trip charge(I live about ********************************* provo). He came out once to diagnose and once for the repair. He also never specified that a trip charge could apply.The quality of work was fine and the hot tub now operates normally and it may have been a fair price for the job but he did not communicate that the job would be more than twice his original quote. I'm pretty angry and caution against using his service for fear of predatory pricing.,
