    Pattern of Complaint:

    Since January 2019 to date, the BBB of Greater Houston began receiving several complaints and customer reviews that have exhibited the following pattern;

According to consumers’ disputes, it has been alleged that Vista Energy engages in unethical door-to-door sales practices and incorrect billingConsumers stated representatives are very persistent and refuse to leave when asked. It has been reported the sales’ representatives heavily persuade customers to switch to Vista Energy for a lower rate.  However, when they receive their statements, they find their new rates are significantly higher. Consumers allege the company is not transparent regarding rates if a consumer attempts to discontinue service or make changes to their accounts.

Consumers also allege the company is misrepresenting themselves as working for the consumer's current energy company and in some cases, consumers stated the company illegally obtained their account information from previous service providers.   When contacted regarding this issue, consumers report they were told the cancellation process may take several weeks to switch back to their previous providers.

Below are a few examples of the types of complaints and reviews that the BBB received.

In 4/2024, a consumer’s complaint alleges that a Vista Energy Marketing representative showed up to her door dressed in the clothes of their current energy company telling her they could help with her bill. Without her consent, she now has an added charge to her utility bill which has caused her bill to skyrocket.

In February 2024, a consumer claims a representative of Vista Energy came to their apartment complex and was pounding on doors and trying to open them. The Property manager confronted one employee who stated he had a right to be there and continued to pound on doors. There is a No Solicitation sign which was ignored. When they threatened to call the Police, he walked away and continued to pound on doors. He was asking older residents for their utility bills and social security numbers.

In October 2023, a reviewer stated a representative came onto their property and was told to lave but he refused. It was a gated condo building and they walked into the garage to gain access. They continues to knock on door even when they were asked to leave.

According to customer review in August 2022, company misrepresented themselves as the consumer's current provider stating they were there to lower his rate. The consumer didn't speak English and the rep signed the consumer's name and switched his power and gas.

A recent customer review from July 2022, " July 13, a representative from Vista Energy Marketing came to my door. He misrepresented himself as being from my electric company saying he needed to ensure I had seen a notice from the company on my latest bill. He asked me to sign in to my account on my phone, then tried to grab my phone out of my hands to show me something. Thankfully I pulled away in time. He then claimed he was there because a new federal clean energy law entitled me to some fees refunded on my electric bill, and asked for detailed account information. When I expressed concern that this all seemed shady and asked why the electric company couldn't just issue me a refund or a credit on my next bill, he told me I looked very pretty and he "prefers a natural look for women." He then pressured me to sign a document. When I refused, saying I wasn't going to sign anything without reading it first, he told me that if I just signed first, someone would call me and explain everything. I again told him I wasn't signing something without reading it and told him I needed to get back to work. He left trash outside my door when he left. To recap: This sales rep misrepresented himself, sexually harassed me, tried to pressure me into signing something without letting me read it, and littered on my property."

Vista Energy strives to use highly qualified and reputable agents to sell its products.  Agents are required to pass stringent background checks and undergo comprehensive testing.  Door to Door agents are required to follow a comprehensive code of conduct and demonstrate integrity with each enrollment.  Agents are not allowed to improperly obtain account information from a customer.  Vista Energy has zero tolerance for any type of behavior that undermines our reputation in the community.  If we find an agent is not following the Code of Conduct, he/she is removed from selling on behalf of Vista.  Regarding cancellation requests, Vista’s policy is to send a cancellation request to the utility immediately after receiving it from the customer.  The utility typically processes switch requests effective with the date of the scheduled meter read, but the actual switch date is beyond Vista’s control after the request is sent to the utility.  Customers are encouraged to call us at 888-211-4093 if they are experiencing any difficulty with a door-to-door agent or have a question or problem about any aspect of Vista’s service.

on 3-11-24 an employee of this company came to my door claiming to be PG&E they said they needed to check my billing statement to ensure that my bill was at the proper price per the new laws and how they were going to be raising rates soon. I showed them my bill and she said it was too high she said to sign the waiver saying she spoke with me and that she documented that my rate was too high and that it was going to be at a fixes rate and not raise like everyone else's since we lived in an apartment. I sign the waiver and before she leaves she shows me her badge and said she is from vista energy and that I will get a copy of my waiver verifying she was here and such. I receive the "waiver" via text and see that it is a CONTRACT for 12 months to raise my PG&E bill significantly. I contacted the company via their website an am expected to hear from them tomorrow. I am also going to contact PG&E and see if they can refuse the transfer of service.

Arbor Pointe is a multifamily apartment community with "No Soliciting" signs posted at the entrances. On 12/8/2023, 5 or six agents of Vista Energy Marketing came on to our multifamily property, started knocking on doors and asking for our Residents' PG&E information and making our Residents uncomfortable. When asked by Management to leave the property, they refused and said they were going to keep doing what they were doing, as well as refused to give any identification at all. We have had multiple incidents like this, all with Vista Energy Marketing's Agents. Every time they are asked to leave they either leave and come back, or refuse to live. They are extremely rude as well. We have also tried contacting Vista Energy Marketing directly but they refuse to stop their Agents from harassing our Residents.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.

Nobody from Vista Energy Marketing has spoken with anyone in the Rental Office for Arbor Pointe Apartments.  The response says they talked with a manager and resolved "their" issue, but is unspecific about who they spoke with and how the issue was resolved.

      Regards,

An employee from Vista energy came to my door claiming to be a **** employee and adamantly claiming they can save money on my gas bill. Since he claimed to be a **** employee and not realizing how California actually operated with their billing, I obliged in showing my bill. I asked him about the services multiple times throughout the process and he proceeded to divert the subject as if it wasn’t an option to say no. He never answered a single question. I had to call the company, after finding out he falsely informed me on his intent of a third party service, to cancel the service. I currently will not know if they actually cancelled it until my next gas bill. The employees badge number is: ****

Doesn’t make a lot of since for them to request my number and address for my account. They can clearly see through the report I provided my email address and phone number. Also, there is no option to even respond to their request. I’m not looking for a resolution, I’m filling a complaint so people are aware of the type of employees they have in their company.

Representative of the business knocked on my door saying they needed to normalize my electrical rates. Asked to look at my bill, but should I pulled up on my phone and then asked to look at my phone. After collecting some additional info he handed my phone back and said I was all set. After he left I scrolled through my history. He had signed me up to receive electrical serving through vista without my consent.

A man representing this company just knocked on my door asking for the former homeowner. I explained to him that I recently moved in and the person he was looking for no longer resides here. He stated that it was no problem, all he had to do was look at my electric bill in order to update the account information for the property. I showed him my bill to prove I am the current homeowner and he took it and started using the information on my bill to fill out some forms on his two cell phones. I then signed a form, which I thought was to unenroll the property from Vista. Nope. It was a confirmation of enrollment which I DID NOT fill out myself. When I was handed his phone to sign, all I could see was a giant signature box. During the interaction, I asked the man multiple times what exactly he needed since I wasn't a customer, as well as what services Vista provides, without getting a straight answer. Whenever a question was asked, the man quickly changed the subject and continued to small talk about other things. During the exchange he took my phone and began filling something out on there as well. When I finally got my phone back I saw that he had enrolled me into an account with Vista Energy despite me saying I already have an account with the local utility provider and was not interested. After he left I immediately called Vista to ensure that I would not actually be enrolled in a program and explained this all to the representative. I was told that my application was cancelled and that a report would be written in regards to to the sales man who came to my home, however, I have no confirmation that the pending application and account was cancelled.

On August 24th 2022 a young man in a high vis work vest knocked on my door and told me that pg&e, my energy provider, had been sued for some kind of pipeline accident. As a result he was checking to make sure they weren't overcharging me by looking to see if I had price protection on my bill. He said they were erroneously charging people almost double what they should to cover the cost of the settlement. I showed him how I didn't even have any charges for gas on my bill and he said everything was good on my bill. Then he came back with someone else and the new guy basically said all the same stuff but more rehearsed and told me I needed to sign up for a new gas provider. Then with two guys at my front door. They pressured me to fill out an application and took my phone to do some of the changes and then had some kind of verification service call my phone. They told me to say that I wanted to change gas providers, and say that they never took my phone. Even though it was untrue. The whole time it felt like they had misrepresented their intentions and that I was being scammed. But I also felt intimidated into doing what they said, something I didn't want to do. And something I certainly didn't ask for!

On 8-12-22, I spoke to Kathy ****** with Vista Energy. I was informed that Vista Energy has been charging my account for approximately 3 times (19/KWH) the current energy company of (6.65/KWH). Ms. ****** stated that a letter was sent to my home in 2018 to inform me that my service agreement was over. I did not receive the notification. I was also informed that Ohio Edison was the default energy company and that was the company which should be my supplier, since the contract was not renewed. Which I did not renew with Vista Energy. I am requesting that Vista Energy refund the difference in KWH pricing from 2018 to current. This company has not provided myself (the consumer), with any information that service would continue with their company. Not to mention misleading the customer with an energy rate 3 times higher than originally promised. They are unfair and misleading. They never contacted me regarding increase of rates. Ohio Edison stated their rates have averaged 4-6 cents/KWH. Vista Energy, has a rate of 19 cents per KWH. The unethical actions of this company is beyond ridiculous.
