I am filing this complaint for my mother in law, *****************************. We had Roofs by Kevin install a new roof in September 2017 at **** Merrimac after Hurricane ****** damaged the roof. We agreed on a proposal that included the new roof, new fascia, soffit, vents and labor. The proposal also included city permits and windstorm certificate. A few months ago we have noticed wood rot on the facia and soffit in three different areas. We contacted ******************* and he came over to assess the damage. He stated that my father in law provided the lumber and it was not pressure treated which resulted in the damage. This was not true, and the attached proposal shows that they purchased the lumber which was included in the proposal. We have tried contacting the company several times and left voice messages and sent text messages of the proposal with no response. The damage to the fascia and soffit is not normal wear and tear and probably due to sub-standard materials used and installation.Business response

I spoke with **************** over the phone so I could address the complaints he wrote to BBB about the project we completed for his mother-in-law, *****************************. In our phone call
I explained to ***************** in detail all of the following:
1.) The proposal he was citing (Proposal 2) that stated us "Adding new plywood & Materials" was the incorrect proposal that was agreed on. Proposal 1 was the document that was chosen for the roof.
2.) Two proposals (Proposal 1 and Proposal 2) were created at the request of his wife, ***********************. The difference in both documents in regard to the

I am rejecting this response because:
Kevin reached out to my wife on Nov 8th about discussing the issues. She told him to get with me on the issues. He did not so I texted him. He stated he would only speak with my wife because she signed the proposal. I again stated she is giving me permission to discuss the issues. He finally called hours later. I told him that he provided the wood for the fascia and soffit and installed per the contract. He brought up the two proposals and stated that the wood was rotted because it was not treated. I responded that you do not use treated wood for fascia or soffits because the moisture in the wood would cause it to warp or crack. I believe it's also against code. House builders and contractors never use treated wood because of this fact. He then shifted to saying well his engineer approved it. I explained to him that the rot is in the corners of the roof. If it was faulty wood, why didn't the other areas get rotted out? He didn't have an answer but said again his engineer approved it. I told him there is obviously issues in the roof where the rot is. I also told him that **** was used as a primer along with Behr exterior paint. The items are very high quality. He again used the excuse that his engineer approved the work. I texted him to provide the engineer's name and he stated he would. He never did. See attachment.

I spoke with **************** over the phone so I could address all the complaints he wrote to BBB about the project we completed for his mother-in-law, ******************************
In our phone call I explained to **************** in detail all of the following:
1.) The proposal he was citing (Proposal 2) that stated us Adding new plywood & Material was the incorrect proposal that was decided on. Proposal 1 was the document that was chosen for the roof.
2.) Two proposals (Proposal 1 and Proposal 2) were created at the request of his wife, ***********************. The difference between both documents in regard to the rotting that **************** has noticed, is that Proposal 2 would include treated wood, and Proposal 1 would not. Treated wood of course has a significantly longer life span compared to untreated wood, especially when exposed to various climates.
3.) The contract does not include treated wood, which was fully explained to ***************** before her signature was obtained, and before her signature was obtained, everything on the contact was explained and reviewed once more so that we both understood what would be performed. I made ***************** fully aware that treated wood would last longer and could be more beneficial, especially in the weather that often occurs in the city, but she respectfully declined.
4.) In addition to following the contract specifications, the installation was thoroughly inspected by a licensed engineer during and after completion. The material that has begun to rot does not correlate to the work that we accomplished, especially if all our work was followed and executed as promised.
I understand the frustration that Mr. and ***************** must be feeling in this situation, and I wish there was another way for me to assist, but the current state of the material does not automatically dictate that the services I provided were poor or not fulfilled properly. All the documentation that I have in my possession will be attached this message as well. If there is anything else needed of me, please feel free to contact me again.
Thank you and have a wonderful day.
Best,

I am rejecting this response because:The proposal that was selected was for $6975. which states exactly the same for both proposals under Carpentry:
Tear off all face board 1x8 and 1x2 trim and wood.
Install around 210 Ln Ft of new facing board 1x10 and 1x4 wood.
Install new soffit under the roof.
Install new soffit vents.
The only difference in the proposals was that the more expensive one was for replacing all the roof sheathing (plywood). We selected the lower proposal which replaced only the water damaged sheathing.
Treated wood was never an option or ever mentioned as you can see in the two proposals. It is rarely ever used for fascia repair. Builders for new home construction do not use treated wood for fascia or soffit installation. The wood has too much moisture and will bow or warp. Treated wood is another excuse the business is using for shoddy work. if you recall, his first excuse was that we provided all the material, which was totally untrue as stated in the proposals.
The pictures show the extensive damage that was caused to the fascia and soffit which would never occur in this short period of time. It is obvious that the areas in which the fascia rotted was not installed correctly due to the construction itself. He also stated that the materiel does not correlate to the work he accomplished. He provided the material and construction. How does it not correlate.
Regards,
