• Advertising Review:

  BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict with the BBB Code of Advertising.  These claims may come to our attention from our internal review of advertising, consumer complaints and, competitor challenges.  BBB asks advertisers to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove misleading or deceptive statements.

  On May 10, 2023, BBB contacted the business regarding advertised claims on their website https://offthegrid.energy.

  Off the Grid Holdings, LLC advertises they offer price matching.  Specifically. their website advertises: 

  “Price Match If you find a lower quote, don’t worry-at Off the Grid Energy, we’ll match it.”

  BBB Code of Advertising states advertisements that set out company policy if matching or bettering competitors’ prices may be used, provided that: The offer is made in good faith. The offer clearly and conspicuously discloses fully any material and significant conditions which apply including, if applicable, what evidence a consumer must present to take advantage of the offer; and the terms of the offer are not unrealistic or unreasonable for the consumer.

  Advertisers should be aware that such claims unless appropriately qualified, may create an implicit obligation to adjust prices generally for specific products or services. This may be the case where the advertiser’s price for a product or service is not as low as or lower than a competitor’s price.

  BBB requested Off the Grid Holdings, LLC to clarify the applicable terms and conditions including what evidence a consumer would need to provide to take advantage of the offer and disclose the required information that needs to be presented on their website.

  Off the Grid Holdings, LLC also advertises they offer a “warranty”, “industry-leading warranties” and guarantees.  Specifically, “Off The Grid Energy guarantees that you will achieve savings, or we will make it right.”

  BBB Code of Advertising states when using the term “warranty” or “guarantee” in product advertising, the advertiser must clearly and conspicuously include a statement that the complete details of the warranty can be seen prior to sale at the advertiser’s location, viewed on the advertiser’s website or, in the case of mail or telephone order sales, made available free on request. 

  BBB requested Off the Grid Holdings, LLC to provide a copy of their guarantee and warranty policy and to modify their website to disclose how a consumer can view the warranty and guarantee before the sale.

  Off the Grid Holdings, LLC also advertises the benefits of solar energy including: 

  "Energy independence and reliability during power outages" 

  BBB discovered this may be the case if a consumer has battery storage integrated with their solar panels as solar panels alone will not provide power during an outage.

  BBB Code of Advertising states misrepresentation may result not only from direct statements but by omitting or obscuring a material fact.

  While BBB found Off the Grid Holdings, LLC's homepage outlines this detail BBB requested modifying the residential page (https://offthegrid.energy/residential/) to include this detail in the advertisement.

  As of June 15, 2023, Off the Grid Holdings, LLC failed to respond to BBB's requests to modify, substantiate or discontinue the advertised claims.
