Barrett Company made a recent repair on our rental property roof and it looks great! They've also installed roofs on three of our other homes in the past 15 years. Honest, dependable and quality work!

Barrett Roofing replaced my entire roof with a "30-year roof" in 2013 after I incurred storm damage. In 2019 a ceiling stain in a room I rarely use was brought to my attention by my new cleaning service. This prompted an evaluation of my roof. We called Barrett Roofing and they sent a representative who spent an hour in my attic but was unable to find a roof defect. He surmised that my air conditioning vent was leaking and recommended we bring in an AC repairman. An AC company came and immediately found the large defect in the seam of the roof. Most notably they also found extensive bird droppings and nesting in the attic and verified that the AC was not leaking. Subsequently I re-contacted Barrett company and spoke with two of the owners. Both informed me (after looking at pictures taken by their representative who did not notice the defect or the bird droppings) that my issue was not a roof issue, rather it was a soffit and fascia issue. According to their contract they do not cover soffits. He also told me that leaves or an animal could have caused the damage. (I have a high roofline with no adjacent trees, so only birds have access to my roof). I paid the AC company $1,000 to remove and discard of the extensively soiled AC insulation and remove bird carcasses. I hired another construction company who found defects in the roof flashing and HVAC vent skirt and cap which cost approximately $3,500. These would have been covered by Barrett's initial contract. I filed for small claims court in February 2020 and had a court date in July 2020. I rearranged my schedule to show up in court to find that the owner of the company would not be present. In his place was the company attorney who had no prior knowledge of the case and therefore requested postponement. I cooperated with his attorney and let him know I was open to a settlement discussion. Due to COVID and illness of the owner, we had numerous other delays. The original owner unfortunately died during proceedings. Two years after the initial conversations with the company, we were again in court. The judge informed me that despite the fact that the Barrett Company continues to operate, I had no case against the the deceased who was the Sole Proprietor of the company. I was informed I could sue the estate which is very complicated and likely cost prohibitive. Their attorney also informed me that if we did proceed, that I would likely be responsible for their legal fees. The judge further informed me that I was beyond the statute of limitations as the attorney smirked "she probably wouldn't understand that anyway". I am aware of the concept of statute of limitations, however I also signed up for an intact roof. I was hoping the Barrett Company would stand by their work as many other contractors do. Professionals like myself are too busy working for our money to be spending time in attics looking for roof or other structural defects. My advice to anybody undergoing any large home repair in the future, (particularly with a roof), is to immediately hire an inspector to ensure the structure is patent. Sadly, it would be wise not to assume that work will be done correctly, or that all longstanding businesses stand by their work.
