I am a student at a nearby university with a gym available to me. I was given this 1 week free gym membership to this place to try through a friend. Upon showing up to redeem my free week, they told me in order to validate the free pass they needed to give me a “quick tour”. After the tour they sat me down at a desk and demanded I sign a gigantic contract with an insane amount of fine print I was not prepared to read through. I had shown up to work out, not go through 2 1/2 hours of delegating and back and forth conversation. I told them I was a student and simply wanted to try the gym for the free week to see if the extra amenities provided would be worth the membership. They said ok, and that as long as I signed the contract if I didn’t like it in a week I could call and cancel. So after spending over 2 hours going through this process I was sick of being there, signed the contract and left, I never even got to workout. The week that followed showed me everything I needed to know. The amenities were horrible and not up to the standard I thought they were at when I went through the tour. Things broken, under maintenance or simply weren’t up to standard. I tried cancelling, but when I did they pulled out the contract and showed me the fine print in a specific area of the contract, saying I was locked in for the year and that they would continue to charge me. Since then I have cancelled my card, but now they have sent my info to a collection agency that has been demanding and harassing me to pay the entire year membership PLUS an insane “late fee” or else they will take “further action”. I was harassed and pressured into signing a contract that was deceitful and not clear with what I thought I was getting myself into. The sales tactics of this business are extremely shady and illegal. I feel completely ripped off and wished I had never stepped foot into this business for my nonexistent “free week pass”.

I signed up for a membership at this gym and was told I could cancel at any time for free. I cancelled in December 2020 because I was moving to a different state. They told me that I would need to pay $100 to cancel. I was frustrated, but agreed. They said they charged my card and my membership was canceled. August 2021, I get a call from a debt collector saying I owe $286. I called the gym back and they said they didn’t process the payment and my account wasn’t cancelled. I asked to get it sorted out and they said that the previous agreement expired and I would have to pay $286 because that was the full cost of the membership. It is unethical to lie about an agreement, fail to comply with the agreement, and then try to get more money from the client.
