This review is a warning to beware. In early February. Our 2010 ****** Forester suddenly had the check engine light come on. We found it was showing a particular code. When we called Modern ****** of Boone service **** for info, were told to run a catalytic converter cleaner through it. "Can it still be driven?" we asked. The tech said we could. We did as told.Only five days later the car started bucking and completely stalled out on the long stretch of highway between Boone and our home. It had to be towed and the nearest service **** was Modern ******. Over the next week and a half, the repair bill mounted! A new catalytic converter was put on and various other "repairs" were made. Our ***************** up to $8,000! THEN we were informed we would need a new-to-us engine and the service tech said they'd found one with ******* miles on it, and that would be another $3500 or so. Keep in mind this is an older car with ******* miles on it. We felt we were over a barrel. We needed a car, but we are a retired older couple, on a fixed income. Finally we asked the mechanic what HE would do if it was his car.He answered that he would stop and NOT do any more repair because he couldn't guarantee the replacement engine would make the car okay. But the car was still not really driveable. His suggestion was for us to come up to Boone, pay the bill and limp it towards home (40 min away!) so if we had to tow it again, at least it wouldn't cost so much to tow it to our house.Still in shock, that's what we did. I gave this review one star because the mechanic did take $2,000 off the *********************** it down to a "mere" $6,000 for a car that is NOT repaired. We feel extremely ripped off. We have researched similar situations and it seems that we should have been informed, from the start, that likely this car was not salvageable, that basically it was totaled. These mechanics, if they had any experience, should have known this. We trusted them to do the right thing...

Regrettably, some repairs cannot be foreseen until a vehicle is operating. In this case, the need to replace the engine could not be discerned until some of the earlier repairs were made. If Modern was solely interested in simply repairing the vehicle without any concern for the customer's best interest, we would not have reduced the bill by $2,000.00, and we would not have advised the customer to make no further repairs and to consider purchasing a new vehicle. All of us at Modern regret that this customer does not have more positive opinion of their experience, but we wish them the very best.

Two weeks ago I took my vehicle in with a problem, was told they needed to diagnose it and they would let me know the results. Long story short/ they charged me $1200. To diagnose and replace battery cables, they said battery, starter and alternator were reading good. Paid them and left. Few days later I had the same issue, took it back, they keep it all week and call me at the end of the week and said a bad battery. It was good a week ago, the battery was only a few years old. Charged me almost $400. The service writer decides to then treat me like I'm stupid and had decided to argue with me and tell me that you can't buy a vehicle and never have issues with it. I have spent thousands at this dealership and this is the treatment I get? They always would go get my vehicle until yesterday, I was told it out in the parking lot. I was so upset the last time I was willing to trade it in, they offered me pay off for the vehicle knowing it was worth more and gave me a run around even offered a lease which is not an option for me. This vehicle didn't have as many issues until their warranty ran out then they gave me a list of all these things that were wrong. Buyer beware when purchasing from this dealership and take your service elsewhere. Was in the waiting room one time and two other people said the same things about this dealership. They look for things wrong , not saying that's bad but they make it so it deemed urgent to repair the problems they suggested. I still have a couple courtesy oil changes they can keep. I plan to sell this vehicle and will never take my business to modern Chevrolet again

Having a problem with an online subaru parts dealer "Modern Subaru" of Boone NC. Normally I have excellent relations with online parts suppliers. This is my first and last order with this company. After numerous attempts to contact the dealer using their online chat agent plus personally speaking with a manager who seemed interested to help but hamstrung (didn't know where the online department was located) and ZERO response I am forced to dispute my order with my credit card company, having no other recourse. I ordered two relatively expensive parts and was only shipped one. The one that was sent was damaged in shipping. I understand that mistakes are made daily but no attempt to reach back/remedy this issue after over a month. This is unacceptable. Avoid the entire "Modern" online dealership cluster.

?Dandre J*** was the service attendant. I may not receive any money back, but I have to let someone know about my experience with the service department of Modern Chevrolet on University Ave. in Winston-Salem NC. I brought my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox in for servicing on December 28, 2022. I was told that the water pump needed to be replaced. It was ready for pick up on December 30, 2022 with a charge of $1,238.77. I'm a senior (82 year old female) on a fixed income and I do believe I was taken advantage of. When I drove away from the dealership, I heard a noise that didn't seem right. So I went back to the service department and was told that I also needed a new timing belt and the transmission seal replaced for approx $6K. I was floored. Why wasn't these issues detected when I first brought it in. I believe the mechanic just wanted to make more money. Of course when I said no way, the car isn't even worth that much. I asked to speak to the mechanic who worked on my car, but management wouldn't allow it. To add insult to injury, they then tried to sell me another car. I will not purchase or have another car serviced by this dealership. I told them they should be ashamed of themselves for treating me this way. Every vehicle I’ve owned has been through Modern. I'm currently looking for another vehicle.

All of us at Modern appreciate Ms. ******'s business. Modern respectfully denies Ms. ******'s recollection of the events that she describes above. Mrs. ****** brought her vehicle in on Dec 28th with an overheating concern and oil leak concern. Modern's technicians diagnosed her vehicle with a leaking water pump, leaking transmission and rear main seal (oil). Mrs. ****** was provided with an estimate for all three Items totaling over $4,100.00 dollars. Mrs. ****** approved the water pump repair for $1,127.74 and declined the transmission re-seal and rear main seal for an additional $3029.05. Mrs. ****** picked up her vehicle on Dec 30th and then brought it back same day stating that there was an excessive noise coming from the engine while driving. Modern looked at the vehicle and determined that the Timing chains were making a slight noise which was normal for a vehicle with 124k miles. We explained to Mrs. ****** and her son that this repair was not related to the water pump replacement, and that we were unable to diagnose this noise at the initial check out due to the vehicle’s overheating concern. We informed Mrs. ****** that the Timing chain would have to be replaced to remedy the noise and gave her an estimate of $2,206.47 which she declined. Of course, the timing chain does not need to be replaced, it would only need to be replaced if the noise is too bothersome.

This is a complaint about the Toyota dealership there. Do not buy anything from this place. These people are nothing but thieves. I bought a part online and wanted to exchange it. I left numerous messages, countless emails, and hours of chat with an “agent”. I never got a response back. Buyer beware!! Zero stars, I was forced to put one star. Worst customer service! You would think that a major carmaker, such as Toyota, would provide good service, not this one. I repeat, these people are nothing but snakes that want your money. My advice is to shop elsewhere for your Toyota needs, it's not worth the headache.
