I am writing to dispute the second payment of $3,700.00 made for services rendered under the agreement signed on June 3, 2025. This agreement pertained to the replacement of a broken pipe beneath my home, extending from the exterior wall at the cleanout to the interior bedroom wall, a distance of approximately 12 feet. The agreed-upon scope of work included digging a trench, removing debris using a HEPA filter vacuum system, hauling away any concrete, replacing the damaged pipe, and pouring new concrete. I was informed that the project would take one to two days to complete, with a total cost of $7,400.00. While this figure was substantial, it was in line with other estimates I received for the same scope of work. However, the actual execution of the project deviated significantly from the agreed-upon terms. On the day of the service, the work crew arrived at 9:30 AM and completed the job, including cleanup, by noon 2.5 hours. The work consisted of digging an 8 x 1 x 4 hole, replacing the damaged pipe, backfilling the hole with the excavated debris, and using two 5-gallon buckets of Quikrete to fill the remaining space.Upon review of the materials used, I calculated the total cost of materials to be $80.43, including one PVC Schedule 40 pipe ($26.91), two couplings ($20.78 each), and two bags of Quikrete ($5.98 each). This suggests that I was charged $7,319.57 for labor, which equates to an exorbitant rate for 2.5 hours of work.I believe that the labor costs charged are grossly disproportionate to the work performed and the time taken to complete the project. While I acknowledge the expertise required for plumbing repairs, the actual work performed does not justify the substantial fee charged. Therefore, I am disputing the second payment of $3,700.00. I believe that the initial payment of $3,700.00 more accurately reflects the value of the services rendered. I request a detailed breakdown of the labor costs and a fair reassessment of the total charges.

on November 25th, 2024, I had a very slow drain in my laundry room floor drain. Water would come up and very slowly drain back down. But, it still drained. I contacted Roto-Rooter to come out and assess the situation. After the tech came, I now have zero drainage. On top of that, the tech removed a clean out cap, said he couldn't fit it back on, then left after charging me. I essentially just paid for Roto Rooter to make my situation worse. Spoke to the manager of the Detroit branch, and they want to charge me even more to fix a problem that they made worse! Absolutely disgusted with this practice. They hire people with no idea what they're doing and makes things worse, then want to charge you to fix their mess up. All I want is for Roto Rooter to fix what they messed up, or to come up with a comparable plan to fix what they messed up. I can no longer use my laundry room and do laundry. I refuse to give this company more money. They must fix what they have done or come up with another option.

We called Roto-Rooter on October 1st, 2024, to our establishment to snake the drains because it as overflowing and paid extra fee for afterhours service, and the tech informed us that if the issue occurs again within a 3-month period, they will come again and fix the problem for no extra charges. On October 29th, 2024, on the same month, the drains overflew again and when the same tech came to our establishment to snake the drains, he refused to do the job unless we pay full price and did not honor the guarantee on the invoice. It is unacceptable conduct from this deceiving business.

The customer called in on 10/9 for water backing up from the kitchen drain. The Tech cabled through the underfloor line and pulled back lots of grease, the tech was able to get the line flowing. We gave the customer a business discount of $40 dollars which brought the bill to $404.91. At that time, we recommended a camera inspection, but the customer declined.

On 10/29 the customer called in for a backup, the Tech inspected the backup and found out it was at this point beyond the main cleanout and water was holding in both bathrooms. The original warranty only covered the underfloor line before the main cleanout, not beyond. That was explained to the customer and an estimate was given but the customer refused.

Customers original warranty is still active this new service was outside of that warranty.

Company lied about the price reassured me that my homeowners insurance would pay for the full price. Not only did the plumbers Make my plumbing worse so I had to go to another company to fix it but to top it off the restoration company is trying to charge me more money even though the manager who was in charge told me that the price would be covered through my homeowners insurance.

Roto rooter installed a new lateral line and tap to the city sewer behind my house. To do this they needed to dig a deep hole and remove my neighbors fence. The work was completed. Dirt was mounded over the ******** was told they would be back in a couple weeks to rough landscape and return the fence, but the ground had to settle first. 5 weeks have passed. I have called 12 times. I have been told they are coming to finish the work twice. No one has come. The manager has not answered my calls for the last two days. The operator is very courteous. For the past 2 days she has put me on hold for 5 minutes and attempted to talk to a supervisor, been unable to, and has assured me that she or the supervisor would be contacting me. They did not contact me. The job has been paid for in full. The water is draining properly, but filling in the hole and replacing the fence is a part of the job and has not been done.

I called Roto Rooter out because my basement toilet was not working on January 30, 2023. I was told that I needed a seal but on for $335.81 and cable for $280.65. He did the work and said that the floor needed to be flat. Well two weeks later the toilet started to leak. called them back out to fix the problem. He come out because I had a 6-month warrant. He informed me that he had to break up and re seal it and that would cost $390. He left and told me the toilet was not working.

Roto-Rooter is responding to a concern filed by ***************************. Roto-Rooter provided service here . The customer had a backed up drain line in the basement, so the technician had to remove and reinstall the basement toilet in order to cable the drain line. the technician than cleared the blockage and let the customer know that the basement floor is not level but will do his best to reinstall it. The technician also left a recommendation to have a camera ran thru the line, but the customer declined at this time. The tech did leave a warranty on the work provided. The customers drain line backed up again about 6 weeks later, so the technician went out and honored the warranty from the original service and again left a recommendation to have the line video inspected and again the customer declined that service.

On March 10, 2023, I scheduled an appointment with Roto-Rooter to have my basement drain cleaned. The scheduled appointment went as requested and the drain was taken care of. However, without my knowledge or approval Roto-Rooter scheduled someone from their **************************** to assess my home, a racist Gentleman by the name of *************************** was selected, who upon entering stated that due to him being in the ***************, he had to lock his vehicle twice, and the *************** had the worst city council members. After assessing the basement, he made unfounded comments to the occupants that were very disparaging, up to including that he lived in Royal Oak, and the *************** was not a good place to live. His assessment of the basement was truly a way to make money, as I have a relative in the same line of business who refuted his claims. It is my understanding that Roto-Rooter sends these individuals to your home as a way to make additional money. Which is wrong on all fronts, unless a customer has agreed to have someone else in their home it could be considered as trespassing. I am prepared to go further with my complaint, I have worked too hard to pay taxes and insurance on my property, to be treated in this manner. **************** is rude, racist, and unprofessional. It is my belief that he handles himself in this manner on a consistent basis, as he was too comfortable making racist comments. What's most troubling is that he is an acting agent for Roro-Rooter. Roto-Rooter is a household name and should do a better job at selecting the people who represent them.

My employee is only stating opinions and does not carry himself nor the company in any racist form. These statements are only and simply ones opinions. Our company policy is to lock company vehicles regardless of what city we are in. We carry expensive expensive equipment in the vans and we need to keep the safe.

Our company offers a few different services. We were only trying to help out and assisting in any clean up if possible. We did not force our self in or on the property. ************************* interaction was not with *************************. It was with a tenant named ****. We do not have a last name.

I do aplogize if any person misunderstood my employee as this was not meant to be of harm or any racist comments. We do not condone that kind of behavior.

On Feb 6, 2023 was when we decided to work with the **************************** of Roto Rooter. Their plumbing department was very professional to work with from the beginning to the end. On the other hand from the beginning there were some questions about the way the water restoration department does things. If I wasnt aware of construction jobs, our resident would have been more of a mess in the beginning. I asked the question on what was the plan in the beginning, will they remove the weight set, when will the dumpster come? Will the machine cause my electric bill go up? We stated about the electrical breaker panel for the house may not take any additional load of the electricity, they said, we are going to have an electrician come to add a connector for the drying machines. The house is an historical home and area, so if you dont know what youre doing, its a problem. In this case, think of someone coming your home and all they see is what they can make off of doing your home, not what is needed, or your responsibility after they are gone. First, some guys came to set up the machines and floor equipment that would run 24 hours, undo the moisture and smells, still running 3/5/23. Being in construction for over 30 years, and a retired inspector, seeing someone come in your home giving you unfinished job in an unprofessional matter is crazy. Having the opportunity to work on your personal property getting paid well, as an insurance job, after the work is done, we are supposed to pay each contractor. Rotor Rooter told my representative of my insurance company they were done, all they wanted was their equipment out of the house. Nothing about finishing the job, remove the weight set, remove the toilet out the tub, fix my steps, steam my basement again, tub, and steps. The employees stream around the weight set, as if it wasnt there. Remember there are other Water Restoration companies that could do the work. Will we have to hire someone else to finish?

      Business Response

      Date: 03/06/2023

Roto Rooter was hired to perform the mitigation services. We removed affected building materials that were damaged to the drain overflow. One we cleaned the floor we realized we need the correct power source to the home. We had an electrician come out to evaluate the existing panel. The electrician deemed the electrical panel unsafe and was unable to temp in electricity to perform the dry out needed. We were asked to give a quote to install a new panel. The quote was verbally given at $ ******** ************ was declined. We were then asked to come pick up our equipment. As of today we are not allowed in the home to get our equipment. After a week and trying to schedule to remove our equipment, the customer still has not scheduled for us to remove the equipment.

We tried everything possible to mitigate the home.

We do not do repairs to the home. We remove, clean and dry the home only. We do not restore.

      Business Response

      Date: 03/14/2023

Roto Rooter has tried to complete the clean up services We were told numerous times that we are not allowed in her house. we were not allowed in the home for two weeks to even get our equipment. As i stated prior, If we are allowed to finish the work we will. We were asked to remove our equipment and leave. Not sure what else we can offer. We were even told that if we invoice the insurance company that she will let them know not to pay us. I am asking at this point what we can do to fix this?

      Business Response

      Date: 03/20/2023

      Good Morning

Timelines are impossible to give as every building structure dries out differently. We can not guarantee times as there are so many variables. We did not have enough power in the house to run our equipment properly so the dry out time was longer.

Like i stated prior. We are only a mitigation company that does the clean up, sanitizing  and dry down. After we are complete you are responsible for the repairs to your home.If we did n ot do something to your satisfaction regarding the clean up process we will be happy to come back and take care of that.

Thank You and have a great day.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of why I am rejecting this response appear below:

      Dear BBB,

Thank you for all your afford as you may understand by now, we are not happy with the matter in which our property has been handled by Rotor Rooter ************************* throughout the month of February and 13th of March 2023.

To continue to see the abuse of our property in the hands of this  business practice is totally unconscionable and crazy to continue in this matter. Thank you for helping us to get an even more clear picture of how things are going for homeowners in our communities.  As a retired licensed contractor and inspector, Im just saddened that this is the format of their work under the name Rotor Rooter ***************************** plus the way their leading representatives, management has handled this project and the communication was just a name brand. What an unprofessional planning stages for our property to be helping the situation at hand.

How many times are we supposed to inform a business of our dissatisfaction with the job. We called for two weeks or more concerning the problem. This is one for the hall of shame in residential work, this is why we contact the BBB. Now after complaining and more complaints of not being happy with the workmanship plus in the matter we have been treated, they want us to continue working with them.  As well, as the false accusations stated and disregarding our concerns, as a homeowner.   No way, there is no trust using our finances in this matter. So we are moving on with our home cleaning, repairs and rehab with a professional team, to bring our house back to an enjoyable home because we are behind our schedule of completion.

Thank you, Better Business Bureau for your help on this matter.

      Sincerely,

      *************************

On November 26, 2022, I discovered a sewer drain backed up in my finished basement. I called Roto Rooter of *******, ** on same day at 7:50 AM. I was told that a plumber would come to my house the same day. As the day went by, no one came, and no one called. I called several times and was told that the next available plumber would call me, but this never happened. Finally, after 5PM, no one even answered the phone. The next day, I called again and was told that a plumber would come by 3PM. Finally, a plumber came at 3PM. He said that my city sewer line needed cleaned out, even though he did not have a camera. My outside water was turned off because it is tied to an irrigation system. He said that he might have enough water in his truck to do a hydro jet cleaning for $1600. I said OK, let's do it. He worked on it for about 90 minutes. I kept asking him if he had enough water, and he assured me that he did, He left around 4:30 PM. The next morning, after washing dishes and taking 2 showers, we discovered that our sewer drain was still backed up. I called Roto Rooter again on Nov. 28th. They promised to come back that day, but never did. I called back a couple times, and they said that they were still coming., but never a did. After 5PM, they did not answer the phone. The next morning, Nov 29th, they called and said that the same plumber was headed my way. He arrived around 9:30 AM, this time with a camera. He said that I needed to replace ***** ft. of sewer line under the floor. This would cost an additional $6500-6800.I told him that I would get a second opinion. On the same day I called Mr. ********************** who came out with a camera and a full trailer of water, ************ with a camera did NOT show a broken pipe, just a very dirty one. They did a hydro jet cleaning for $1192. I want a refund from Roto Rooter for the faulty cleaning, $1600. I called 5 times asking to speak to a manager. Was told that one would call me, but never did. My carpet and padding was ruined $2000.

Roto-Rooter received a call from the homeowner about the drains overflowing in the basement on 11/26/22. We did schedule the call and were in touch with the customer several times thru out the day about availability to send a technician out that day. We did send a technician out on 11/27/22 and he cleared the blockage and was the customer was given a warranty on the line that he cleared the blockage on. The technician did recommend a camera inspection to the customer and it was declined. The customer called back so we sent the technician out again to do a free camera inspection, the tech showed the homeowners wife that the line was clear and flowing , he also left an estimate to replace part of the line due to signs of aging and possible deteriation. the customer stated that he called several times at 5pm on 11/26 and 11/28 and received no answer when the office is open until 9pm on those days. My manager did speak to the homeowner and offered a resolution but it was not acceptable to the homeowner.

[A default letter is provided here which indicates your rejection of the business's response.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of why I am rejecting this response appear below:

[You must provide details of why you are not satisfied with this resolution. Please type details here:]

Roto Rooter offered to only reimburse me for the added hydro jet cleaning of my sewer drain by the second company, MR *********************** That amount was $1192.56. I would like Roto Rooter to refund the full price that I paid them for their failed cleaning which was $1600. On the first visit they did not offer to use a camera, because ****, the plumber said that he did not have a camera. The drain was still backing up on the next day Nov.28th, but Roto Rooter did not come back even though I called them many times.**** came back on Nov. 29th with a camera. He said my pipes under the floor needed replaced and would cost an additional $6800.00. **** did not offer to clean the pipes again, but my drain was still backing up. I told him I would get a second opinion. Mr. ********************** verified on Nov 30th that my pipes were not damaged, just very dirty. I have video proof from the camera that they brought.  I paid them to redo the hydro jet cleaning. I also have a video of the clean pipes after this second cleaning. After this visit, my backed-up drain was fixed. I also want Roto Rooter to pay for my sewer drenched carpet and padding. They did not come the first day that I called them, even though they told me that they would be there the first day. They came on day 2, but did not effectively clear the blockage in the drain. On day 3, the drain was still backing up. Roto Rooter came on day 3, and for the first time with a camera. He wrongly diagnosed the problem as defective pipes. He did not offer to redo the cleaning job. Mr. ********************** redid the job and fixed the problem. I want the full refund from Roto Rooter because I did not receive any value from the cleaning that they performed. As a result of the poor performance and mis-diagnosis,my carpet received way more sewage exposure than it would have, had the job been done right from the beginning. I have video proof that Roto Rooter left the pipes under my foundation dirty after their attempt at hydro jet cleaning. I also have video proof from Mr. ********************** that my sewer pipes under the foundation are not damaged, and do not need replaced.

      Regards,
