I received a Vehicle Inspection on 1/3/23 & was told my car would receive a Safety Rejection unless I replaced rear + front brakes & rotors. I shared that I believed I received front brake/rotor replacement within past 2 years & asked him to double check the front brakes. He proceeded to tell me the brakes still needed replacing. I asked if I needed new rotors or could just replace the ********* advised rotors always needed to be replaced at the same time as pads (a claim disputed by other mechanics I have since talked to). I paid $933.77 for the full replacement of brakes/rotors. Upon getting my vehicle back, I looked at the receipts I had for previous vehicle work. I noticed that just 12 months ago, this same mechanic failed my inspection & also claimed front brakes + rotors needed to be replaced. The timeline of brake/rotor wear did not align with the amount I had driven in 12 months, so I became suspicious as to why the work was performed. I called the mechanic less than 30 min after the service & asked if I could come see the old brakes to confirm their "failed" status -- he told me he no longer had them & donated them & could not get them back. I shared I had since learned he replaced my brakes 12 months ago & he began stuttering & could not offer an explanation. He soon after became defensive on the phone & hung up. After looking at more receipts, I noticed my car had recently received full safety checks from 2 other mechanics -- one on 10/1/22 & one on 11/8/22. Both safety checks fully cleared the health of the brakes & indicated they were in "green" status, meaning they should have plenty of life left. I returned to the shop to show this information to the owner, who again became defensive & started cutting me off & not letting me speak. I left without resolution. I've since learned via reviews that he often fails people's brakes only for second opinions to claim brakes were perfectly fine. I took my car to a 2nd mechanic who confirmed I'd been scammed

The day ***** came in for inspection, i told him he needed brakes, and i offered to show him on the car. i pointed out to him what i saw, he said he could see it too. I gave him a price for the replacement of the brakes, he gave me the ok to go ahead, and thats what we did. After he picked up the car, he told me that he had 2 inspections of the car and its brakes 2 and 3 months prior and he was told they were ok.  What i  dont understand why he had them checked twice in 2 months, and still give me the ok to replace them, only to complain after the fact. I showed him the brakes while they were on the car, he said he could see what i was showing him, then wanted to see the old brakes after i replaced them?  If he had the car's brakes checked twice before i inspected it, he could have taken it and had it checked somewhere else before having them replaced by us.  If his car failed inspection for brakes, he can get them fixed anywhere he wants, he didnt have to have us fix it. Further more, if there was any dispute with the State Inspection that we performed, he could have appealed it with the *** before having them replaced. If he was correct he could have gotten a passing inspection without having the brakes changed. Once they have been replaced, its impossible to see if the old brakes were ok, since they are no longer on the car, so im not sure who this other mechanic is that inspected the car after we replaced his brakes, and told him we took advantage of him. Does that mechanic have a way to see what the old brakes look like after we replaced them? If so, i'd like to meet that person and ask him the powerball #'s.
