On 9/16/2022, I met with ************************* at St. ****** to open a nonprofit (NP) checking acct for an organization I had just started that will provide affordable rental housing for the workforce to prevent individuals from experiencing homelessness, a situation that happened to a family member in 2020. My husband and I have been personal St. ****** members for 5 years. ***** asked me to bring a letterhead statement listing who would be the signer(s) of the account (me) and to bring the *** document from the **** After paying for an order of checks and completing paperwork that day, ***** called me to say the compliance officer (**) needed proof that we were a real NP, or they would have to switch us to a paid business acct - could I send the articles of incorporation. I mailed a copy as soon as I received official notice from the state. ***** called again this past month to say that they would need to switch the acct to a business acct. because the ** once again said we were not a real NP. I told her I could send her the *** letter awarding 501(c)(3) status, a term she wasn't familiar with, but I explained it proved that we were a legal NP. When she called this week to tell me that they were going to have to switch us into a business acct because we did not meet the test of a real NP, because we filed as an NP corporation, I was shocked and upset. I have not dealt directly with the ** or been given his/her name, nor has information about a business acct been discussed with me other than to use it as a punishment or threat. I have not had time to research it myself, as I keep trying to send them more legal information each time they have called, We are a new NP that has not even begun fundraising or ***** writing, yet we are now required to keep $500 in an acct to avoid fees, because St. ****** says we are a business. If the *********** and the federal government have officially declared us as an NP, what other proof can be provided to this credit union?
