I adopted a dog (********** ***** *** * *** ******* ***********) from ACCT in Philadelphia on 22 July 2023. I received multiple emails over the next several days stating that I could apply for Companion Protect coverage for my new pet, with acceptance based upon the shelter medical exam (which stated my dog was healthy), as long as I did so within 10 days. After 10 days, another medical exam would be required for my pet. I did apply within the 10 days but was told that my pet's medical condition would not be covered as it was considered to be a pre-existing condition. Based upon their marketing email, as long as the shelter did not identify the issue with my pet and I applied within the 10 day limit, it should be covered. The shelter did not note that my dog had any medical issues. This is false advertising on the part of Companion protect as it is stated twice in the multiple emails I received from them after adopting my pet that the shelter assessment of my dog's health was all that would be required for coverage.

I have pet insurance with this company for quite a few years now & the reason i signed with them was b/c they guaranteed 90% coverage (after nominal deductible) & NO PREMIUM INCREASE regardless of pet health or age. My policy renews every august for all 3 animals as usual. I submitted a bunch of claims this past friday via the company portal (as done always). When i checked the status of my claims today i noticed 1 was denied. I called them to ask why, only to find out that the company had in fact sold out to a larger insurance company (***** Insurance) and now my policies were changed to LESSER COVERAGE & HIGHER DEDUCTIBLES effective my august renewals. If i wanted to keep the same coverage my policy premiums DOUBLED on 2 policies & INCREASED 6 TIMES on the 3rd policy, equating to an average of $500/mth premium increase. I was given no warning, no prior notice, no anything. On top of this, the company knows i cannot easily find another policy for my 2 old & sick dogs due to their age & preexisting conditions. So they've price gauged me into staying if i want to be able to keep my dogs alive. They unscrupulously gave me no warning nor time to even shop around & make an educated decision. MY dog is going in for surgery tomorrow & i'm not sure i can afford to do it. On top of this, i told them to backdate these increases to when the policies renewed in august & they're not sure they can do that either. I cannot afford to have my dogs surgery tomorrow at their new lesser coverages/higher deductibles. They're forcing me to put my dogs down b/c they've backed me into a corner with their unsavory & unscrupulous business practices. They're attempt to price gauge me is discriminatory. They knowingly moved me to lesser policies with higher deductibles with very sick dogs (they see my claims so they know my dogs' health status). I also filed a complaint with the division of banking & insurance. They're defrauding consumers & it should be stopped
