On 4/26/23, I visited Swords and Phelps for an annual dental cleaning/check up. I presented my insurance information and proceeded with the cleaning. They recommended two fillings and provided an estimated cost of $95.35. I scheduled the fillings for 4/28/2023 and paid $95.35 on that date. On 8/2/2023, I received a surprise invoice from Swords and Phelps for $801.00. I had not been advised of this cost during treatment. This was the amount that the dentist billed the insurance company after treatment. The only cost estimate/bill I received while receiving services was for the $95.35 I paid out of pocket and I was told this was the amount the insurance would not cover for the fillings. I've never before been charged for an annual checkup/cleaning as my dentists have always accepted the insurance settlement in the 30+ years I've had dental insurance. My wife and I made three calls to Swords and Phelps to seek clarity on these charges and spoke with office staff. Based on the EOB's, the insurance agreed to pay $328.75 for the provided services. For the annual cleaning and two fillings, the insurance payment of $328.75 plus the $95.35 totals $421.10. If I had been informed the business would seek an additional $379.90 for these services then I would not have agreed to these services.I'm willing to immediately settle my account with this business for the $328.75 dollars in addition to the $95.35 already paid if they are willing to adjust the invoice accordingly. I would take this as ending this unfortunate situation on the best terms possible for both parties. If they are unwilling to accept this solution, I'd request a call from the owner to understand their perspective on their billing process and policies on providing cost details to patients.
