In August, I received a letter in the mail stating "Congrats on registering your business with the ***********." This letter was address to my sister, **********************************, and it looks like it was from the state & given that the return address is **********," I paid the ***** via check. My sister just set up & applied to have her business in ** & is in the process of moving. I have called twice asking Certificate Service for a refund, and have yet to receive it. It appears they try to deceive folks into believing they are a government/state organization & this is not the case. When I called the first time in mid October, they told me it would take **** business days for me to receive the refund. I called again this past Friday, but I am not hopeful that I will be receiving any sort of refund. Document #: ******* . There is no means to contact these folks except by ********** is difficult to reach them.Customer response

Amount of money taken: $87.25 Check number: **** (Chase)Check process date: 12/24/2022 The business sent me a misleading mail that makes it look like it is from the government and I have to send a check to them by 12/15. It turns out it is one of many scam businesses that claims to help with my business set up process.I called them and talked to the person before the check was taken, and he said he will send a refund. However, now the check has been processed and he is ignoring my calls. I also have not received any confirmation about the service they are claiming to provide, so they just took my money for nothing.Initial Complaint

Received a 2022 certificate is status request form from the NM certificate service when I first registered my business. Sent in $87.25 and haven't received anything. Called and no one helped. I just want my money back, I'm a small business and every penny counts. Please help!Business response

In September 2021, I received a 2021 Certificate of Good Standing request form from OH Certificate Service. I mailed the completed form with a check for $67.50 to them on September 13, 2021. As of October 13, 2021, I had not received the certificate. That day, I spoke with Julie via phone. As of December 1, 2021, I had not received the certificate. That day, I spoke with Fred via phone. He asked when the check cleared. I told him it cleared on September 24, 2021. Fred indicated he could not pull up my company's name. I asked to be transferred to a supervisor. Miles (the supervisor) indicated she put in another request for the certificate to be sent to me. As of January 6, 2022, I had not received the certificate. That day, I spoke with Felicia via phone. As of today's date - March 2, 2022, I have not received the certificate. This morning, I spoke with someone at the Ohio Secretary of State's office. She indicated that OH Certificate Service is not a legitimate company.Initial Complaint

This company sent a misleading letter urging me to pay them $87.25. The letter makes it look like they represent the Secretary of State, so I paid immediately, thinking that I was paying the Secretary of State. I just saw a notice at the Secretary of State website right now that this notice is a fraud. Please return my money. My bank is ****** Credit Union, my account number is ********** and the check number is **** PLEASE RETURN MY MONEY PLEASE....HELPBusiness response

After filing to start up an LLC, I received a "professional" looking letter in the mail that stated I needed to submit a money order for a letter of in good standing. I was not aware that I needed this, but also felt pressured as it stated to respond by 9/17. I got the money order on the 16th of September 2021 and mailed it priority on the 17th. The following Monday, after checking out the reviews on the bbb, I called and spoke to "Johnny" who said that my money order was "still in the mailroom" and hadn't been cashed. So I could call back next week for the refund. I unfortunately took his word and now that I've waited I tried to call the number and it does not ring. He has purposely turned off the phone to ignore calls even though it states on his fraudulent paperwork that the hours are from 9-5 Monday through Friday. He had also mentioned to me that they don't do business in AZ anymore which didn't make sense to me, being that I received that letter. This is fraud, and will sue.Business response

OH Certificate Service located in Columbus, Ohio is misleading new Businesses in thinking that they need/are required to purchase a Certificate of Good Standing. I paid a $67.50 fee in November of 2020, but never received anything (i.e. the actual good standing certificate). However, I received a request letter in the mail dated June 2, 2021 and that made be suspicious because I just paid for the same thing in November of 2020. Therefore, I contacted the State of Ohio and found out that this is not connected to the State or required to be purchased in order to be in Good Standing for Ohio. Once, I found out this information, I immediately contacted the company on June 2, 2021 to advise and requested a refund. I waited patiently for a refund until July 14, 2021 but never received it, and then contacted them again but appeared to still be getting the runaround. So, I'm filing this complaint for a refund of $67.50 and requesting that this company stop misleading new Businesses.Business response

Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2021/07/15) */ I am writing to respond to the complaint your office received regarding our mailing on the services we provide to help newly formed company's obtain Certificates of Good Standing. It appears the basis of the complaint is that we are somehow posing as an official state agency and making it appear as if the companies we contact are required to respond or take action. Our company is nothing more than a private third-party service provider who, for a reasonable fee, will obtain an official Certificate of Good Standing from the Secretary of State for newly formed companies. Our fee covers not only our time in processing the request, ordering and ensuring delivery of the certificate of good standing, but also includes the cost that we pay to the Secretary of State to obtain the Certificate of Good Standing for the companies that hire us. We also make sure to set forth in our mailings that the Certificate of Good Standing is "elective", and we further give notice, right in the middle of our mailings that "this is not a government agency". Further, we make sure to include on the top of our correspondence a telephone number and email address for the companies to reach out to us with any questions they may have. In sum, we are simply offering a service to obtain a Certificate of Good Standing from the Secretary of State and have that delivered to the companies that hire us, and we do not believe that there should be any confusion with our mailings. I hope that this response is helpful to explain how and what we do, and should you have any further questions or need any additional information please do not hesitate to let us know Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2021/07/15) */ This response was taken verbally by the BBB: I never received certificate from business as I got it from the State. MN Certificate Services won't refund me my $79.50, I have called multiple times to their phone number (888) 842-9265. With every representative stating they sent a request to have the money refunded fir my business (*******************) file# XXXXXXXXXXXXX. I have received my legit copy of my (in good standing) document from Minnesota State of secretary. Which only cost $5.00 for a copy. I did a (return to sender) to address on evenlope for MN Certificate Services. They have yet to refund me my money. I spoke with representative Andrea today on (7/14/21) who states they tried calling me on (7/13/21) at 7:45am with no response. I said that is odd I have no missed calls on my phone. She says I don't know, I see they tried. Why don't you refund me my money and stop with the games here!Business response

Hello, I am accept this response on condition that i actually receive my refund amount of $79.50 by the due date of 07/22/2021 provided by management. i have been going back and fourth with this company regarding this refund, and they all keep advising me it will be refunded. now since filing this BBB complaint i have received a notification its really processed now for my refund, so in the event the refund doesn't arrive, this case should be re-opened. so i am considering this resolved for now.
