I am writing this complaint in reference to a surprise bill (Account #*********) that I received from the hospital for my ED visit on May 12, 2021. Specifically, I am being asked to pay for a blood alcohol level code ******* *he insurance company declined to pay for this code because the hospital submitted three separate codes for the drug screen tests done in the ED. The insurance paid on two of the codes but declined to pay on this last code. On further inquiry I became aware that this third code, ******, was a new code for 2021 and it was already included in the reimbursement for the other 2 codes which is why the insurance company denied that third code. The hospital then tried to come after me directly for it. Prior to this bill, I have already paid and met my maximum out of pocket for the year as well as my deductibles for this year. This bill, a surprise bill, is above and beyond what the hospital collected from the insurance company and my deductibles . The hospital is an in-network provider for my insurance, and I had no control over the ED evaluation or how the hospital chose to code it. Apart from the fact that I went to an in network hospital and my deductible and maximum out of pocket was met for this year, it is unfortunate and unreasonable that the hospital is trying to collect over $1,400 for a standard toxicology test. I attempted to reach out to the hospital in good faith to settle this blood test charge at the usual and customary rate for this test with no success. They have instead referred me to Medicredit, their collection agency. I kindly request that the hospital accept the payments received from my insurance company as a payment in full for my ED and hospitalization, and to recall this account from the collection agency. This is a time when I am trying to put my life back together after a prolonged hospitalization and a surprise $1,400 bill from an in network provider is the last thing I need.
