Spence Fence (SF) was hired to replace a 96' section of my shared wood fence, because the posts had rotted through. The same company installed my less than 5 years old fence; however, they would not assist without payment. My neighbor contacted our home builder and SF was hired to do the replacement and as per SF’s advice, steel posts were to be used instead. The builder, my neighbor, and I evenly split the $3,264 cost. The fence SF installed on May 3, 2023, has caused me to lose access to a portion of my property, they used the wrong wood, and they left several other workmanship related issues. Attached, you will find pictures I both texted and mailed to SF plus a copy of the form given to me on the install day which I signed and returned with my payment that day. I'd like to share the letter I mailed and invoice but you warn about including personal info. Per Sam, SF agent, the new fence was to match my old fence, they’d fully cover the steel posts, and they would use the existing fence line, that they also removed that day, for proper placement. I now understand the new post size affected placement however, they still got it wrong. Also, they used different wood, there are black mold and ink stamps in many places, my landscape rocks and mulch are heavily covered with dirt (but not my neighbor’s side), and there are other issues. I reported the most concerning, which is the placement issue, as soon as I noticed and was assured that the fence was placed on my property line, which wasn’t true as they never found the rear marker. I noticed the wood issue later on. Because of the builder’s involvement, we allowed the project to proceed. I’ve since tried to get someone from SF to visit so I can show them, but they refused. They have also not responded to my letter. As a result, I am submitting this complaint and looking into doing the same with the California Contractors board and going to Small Claims Court.
