Lack of communication and no real settlement with the **** I have worked with Optima for almost 2 years and they were unable to help me. They came up with a payment plan which I could have accomplished myself and in that time, I have accrued even more penalties. I would not recommend anyone to use their service.Business Response

On or around February 3, 2025, I contacted Optima Tax Relief to assist me with a tax matter. I was assigned to *** by the name of **** *******, who was very cordial and seemed to want to help in the beginning. He told me that in order for him to take the case, the fee would be $495. I asked if that was all, and he ***lied yes. I asked him again, because I had just decided not to go with a firm that wanted to charge me $1500 and was very rude and tried to intimidate me. So I was ready to accept. I also told him that I was struggling and did not have much money as my car payments and high rent was hard for me to keep up with. He gave me a date to send the money. The original date, I did not have the money and asked if he could wait until the following week. Which he did. After I went online and deposited the $495 dollars, I was given a date for a resolution. And that's when he told me for him to continue would be $2400!! I was shocked and said that's not what you told me. He became belligerent, and started talking over me not listening to anything I was saying. He asked if I read the fine print? I ***lied I should not have when I was told a one time fee of $495. I would never had agreed to $2400 because I knew I could not afford it. I feel that I was greatly taken advantage of. I called and told him I would not be moving forward with Optima.Business Response

Optima Tax Relief promised to help resolve my *** debt. I paid them the initial investigation fee of $495. They then informed me they could help for and additional $2768. So I said great, and they offered me a payment plan and I paid it. They gathered my documents for an OIC, which anyone can do themself, had I known this was the resolution route I would've declined the services, but thought oh well saves me time, and they do this all the time. The financials needed are time sensitive and were provide timely. So a month goes by, I call, BTW NO ONE from your team is ever available, so you have to leave a message, and are lucky if they call you back. However the call center person can provide some info, "like oh yes they are still working on it". Long story short after over 30 phone calls, tears, rude customer service **** etc.... I spoke to someone who was not form my team but wanted to help because I was in tears, and seemed to understand my frustration with the lack of call back, information and care about my case. Last time I checked I am the customer. ( I mean this was ALOT of money, that I could've just paid the ***). She informed that a mistake must've been made because they new back in October 2024 ( this is now Feb 2025) that they could not help me and I probably shouldn't have been paying still. Pretty clever on their part to finally let me know what is going on after I already paid the full amount! I asked for a refund, and that was fun too, these folks actually do call back, but can't do anything. "not our policy to give refunds" Oh really even when you all readily admit that you dropped the ball! I was over wasting my time trying to get an ounce of customer service, I threw the towel in a filed a dispute with my bank. Well surprise surprise that got their attention. This is the worst company you could ever hire for your taxes. They are unprofessional and you will be worst off then when you started. Over 5 years ago I hired them to help me as I fell behind on taxes and they charged 8000 dollars which I paid. This made me think they would work it out and get me back on track over this time communication was almost zero and they repeatedly would request the same documents. When I called in I would get someone who supposedly worked on my case but could never get me answers. Finally I have now received a threat from the *** and it appears Optima has not done anything. When I called today and explained the urgency to see where my case stands I was told nobody was available and they would call back within 2 days. They never call you or update you and when you ask them direct questions they have no answers. At this point I am waiting for a call and unless they can give me information and show me they have done the work they promised I am asking for a full refund and may even contact an attorney as I am feeling very deceived. I was told a year to resolve issue we are now on year 6. Do not hire this company they will put you in worst shape then you were before. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!Business Response

Optima Tax has established communication with our client upon receiving this complaint. We understand that this process can be time-consuming which may lead to frustration, which can sometimes result in misunderstandings. However, our team is always committed to achieving the best possible resolution for each client and this often requires completing multiple steps to thoroughly assess each case, which often takes time. First, we ensure all tax returns are accurately filed, all audits were correctly assessed based on available substantiation, and all IRS under-reporter assessments were correct. Once this process is complete, we review the Client's financials for possible hardship, or whether the best resolution is an installment agreement. From there, we present options to the Client and determine how they wish to move forward. Once we begin services, we initially contact the *** to establish our Power of attorney and then once again establish contact when our Client agrees on a plan of action as stated and reviewed in our *************** agreement before initiating services.
Upon review of our client's case, our resolution team feels they have made multiple good faith attempts to come to a mutual resolution. Unfortunately, after many discussions we were unable to reach a mutual agreement. Our team feels they have addressed all their concerns and despite our client being outside the cancellation window, we have offered a courtesy refund. This courtesy refund will remain on the table should the client wish to accept.

On 1/23/2021, I paid $495 to Optima Tax Relief (OTR) to review my ********* taxes and do an "investigation" which involved my provision of my SSN, my past years' salaries and authorization for OTR to obtain IRS ********* transcripts. OTR told me: 1) I owed about $70,000 in taxes; 2) IRS would come after me; 3) I was facing jail time; 4) I needed to do this asap to get better treatment and 5) my life would spiral downward to an end. I remember being in shock and I was scared since my wife and I are not in good health. OTR told me they could help if I paid them $5,472 so that they could stop *** from taking these actions by sending them a cease and desist letter and work with *** to develop an acceptable offer/payment plan. To do so, I had to complete numerous questionnaires and upload numerous documents for them. I was desperate so I paid $5,472 on May 3, 2021 but because of our overriding medical conditions (including my wife's hysterectomy and another surgery and my need for shoulder/foot surgery), I had changed jobs 3 times in a few years, we moved to a different state, the ***** pandemic and I didn't have any savings, I was unable to locate the requisite info/documents. I did send a few recent paystubs and tried to complete one of many questionnaires but could only answer a few questions. I told *** I couldn't provide these items and didn't have money anyway and asked for the return of $5472 but was told that I could only get a refund if I had cancelled within 15 days after paying them. I myself have been working with *** and have already taken care of 2017- 2018 and will finalize resolution of ********I and will only pay a fraction of what OTR claimed. Also, *** never took the extreme actions OTR claimed. So, I again recently asked OTR for my money back because OTR didn't do anything, they provided misleading/deceptive info to scare me and it's unconscionable that they are a predatory company taking advantage of desperate people.Business Response

In early part of March 2025 I got a call for Optima tax relief in regards to getting my taxes resolved. I went through the normal process and I spoke with this man name *** and he walk me through on how the process would work. He told me that it would cost me $495 dollars to get started for them to get my Tax Transcripts from the **** He mentioned to me once he got my transcripts back that he would give me a call. I heard from him one time and that time was that he gotten my transcripts back, but it was missing a whole lot of information and that he would have to call me back and set up another appointment with me, but that never did happen, because he never called me back. Here we are now going into the end of April 2025 and I still have not gotten a call from them. I finally called them today on April 22, 2025 to ask for my refund, since no one had contacted me. The person I spoken to told me that since I've passed the 15 day ***** period I would have to have an appointment to get my refund back. The appointment he gave me was for May 15, 2025, which is insane to me. I just want my money back, because no one should be taken advantage of like this. If this company was not going to help me, then they should have not taken my $495. I'm hoping the BBB can help me get this resolved, because this is terrible that this company would do this.Business Response

Back in Sept. of2022 we found out my husband had to have a liver transplant due to nonalcoholic cirrosis of the ******** husband never drank he was more a workaholic then anything.*** couldn't work no more we were paying the *** 1200. to 1500. dollars a month every month til then,we couldn't pay them anymore so we paid 6300. which we had to borrow from our granddaughter to pay optimal tax relief.We were expecting this to be taken care of.We sent all the information they asked for answered their calls when they called .They told us our paperwork just set on a desk because someone quit for a whole year.Finally we got a paper from the *** stating we would get it settled the date of Dec.2 2024 it was not resolved,Then we got another paper from the *** with another date of April *******.which is now passed also .We are having health problems because of all this continuing.we payed them money we had to borrow they never seem to return our calls,it has been since 2022 it is now 2025 almost half through the year.Everybody had said they really won't do anything until you turn them into the bbb,now I believe them that is why I am complaining about this business it is a shame it has to come to this. As optima is supposedly taking care of this the *** is still adding fees and interest onto what we owed which is becoming a whole lot more now then what it was .please help and let other people how slow they can be not just a year but years.I really don't know what else I can tell you but this not very professinal on their part. ********* ********Business Response

I went to them for filing back H33**3230**3337333836H in 2022. I paid all of the money except for $412.00 because I had financial problems and health issues. I went back recently and I paid over the full amount. I was on a payment plan with the *** and the *** told me to call them and tell them know so they could stop the payment arrangements. The *** stopped it in March then took the payment out in April. I told H34373738**3632**36H and told them what the *** did and the *** said that they can do this, which was not true. **** ********* was handling my case. A ***, ******** ******, claimed to have called me but I don**;t see that she did this. She called the first time then sent an email. Then she called back a couple days later saying that my number was blocked. I called back again and they said it would take 48 hours before talking to me. I went to the website to get my documents but I couldn**;t pull them up, and then I told them I would contact the H363137**3238313831H and haven**;t heard anything from them. I want my $495 back, access to my documents and what will happen with the remaining $2,000 that I paid them.Business Response

During the initial engagement with the sales person, ******, there was an extreme amount of overpromising in terms of what Optima tax relief would provide via its services, the support received, time the engagement would take, and value for the cost of the service provided. The experience is the same every single time. I provide whats needed immediately. Then I dont hear anything for weeks. I will call the numbers listed on the website, I'll call the phone number and extension to my "case manager" that ****** provided me, and every other phone number I can find. The phone will either ring endlessly, or I'll get told my case manager isnt available and will call me shortly. Then, I dont hear back. When I submit a message via your website, its not responded to. And when I try to schedule an appointment with my case manager on your website, there is no option to select a case manager. I am not sure if i actually have a case manager or not.Then, I will escalate to ******. ****** will provide me a phone number or tell me someone is going to reach out to me. In the times that someone has reached out to me, they just say that the case is being worked and then I will hear somthing in a few days. And then again, I hear nothing. This went on for months until I received a letter from the *** in the mail recently saying I am behind on my taxes. This is very concerning given I hired and am paying a lot to Optima to avoid this exact situation. I was told that Optioma would be communicating with the *** That they are filing my taxes. That is clearly not the case. I then provided OPtima (again)everything needed to file my 2023 and 2024 personal and business income tax returns. I essentially completed all 4 returns on my own and sent to them to finalize as I still have not had a single call with anyone to work through the taxes. At this point, I just need to get them all filed. I am getting letters from both the *** and regulators asking when the returns will be filed.Business Response

Optima misrepresented their ********************* options just to get our business. They claim the following but do not deliver - Reduction of penalties imposed by the *** on unpaid taxes - Reduction of interest imposed by the *** on unpaid taxes - Reduction of taxes owed to the ***** Elimination of penalties imposed by the ***** Elimination of interest imposed by the *** Optima coerced us into accepting a payment plan to "protect" us from the *** by setting up a payment plan, claiming it was the best deal we could get. Turns out they LIED, I was easily able to create an account on the ***'s website and choose a smaller amount of a monthly payment, from $485 a month down to $392 a month.Optima sent us a letter stating the monthly payment they set up with the *** would come out on the 28th, but the first payment due in March 2025 came out on March 17th. I called and complained & asked them to fix it, but the untrained employee on the phone said there is nothing they can do about adjusting payments. We paid Optima a total of $3,082.00. RIP ****** April AGAIN, the payment which was set on the ***'s website came out on the 15th RUINING our budget and causing multiple overdraft fees and leaving our account overdrawn for 2 weeks. I wrote emails to Optima and left messages, now they are avoiding us. I was able to log into the ***'s website and as stated lowered my payment and set a new direct debit date of the 28th of each month, Optima LIED, they had the payment set to the 15th of every month. Optima hires people who know NOTHING about taxes to sell their product, and handle phone calls. They have a very small group of so called "Tax Pro's", I'm told they have only 7. Optima is a scam artist company advertising things they cannot deliver, they intentionally deceive people and use fear tactics to get people to act.
